Part-Time Harm Reduction Coordinator
Hourly rate: $23 - $25 per hour depending on qualifications and experience
Hourly non-exempt
Reports to: Director of Harm Reduction and Community Health
Position Summary:
The Harm Reduction Coordinator provides trauma-informed, participant-centered, and culturally responsive harm reduction services to individuals who may be at increased risk for HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The position has a particular focus on engaging people who use or inject drugs (PWUID), LGBTQIA+ communities, women, people experiencing homelessness, and others who may experience barriers to traditional healthcare services.
The Harm Reduction Coordinator is responsible for creating a welcoming, gender-affirming, nonjudgmental environment while providing services both on-site and throughout the community. Core responsibilities include HIV/HCV/STI testing, PrEP education and navigation, community outreach, harm reduction education and supply distribution, participant support, documentation, and community-based educational events.
This community-facing position requires the ability to work independently in a variety of settings, initiate conversations with community members, respond appropriately to sensitive situations, and engage individuals around sexual health, substance use, HIV prevention, and harm reduction.
Job Duties:
HIV, HCV & STI Testing
• Conduct HIV, HCV, and STI testing in accordance with agency procedures, funder requirements, and testing protocols.
• Provide participants with clear, trauma-informed education throughout the testing session.
• Maintain participant confidentiality and privacy throughout testing and service delivery.
• Follow appropriate procedures related to biological specimens, infection prevention, exposure control, and biohazardous materials.
• Transport biological specimens to the designated partner location.
• Maintain a clean, sanitary, organized, and welcoming testing environment, including the testing bathroom and testing supplies.
PrEP Education & Navigation
• Provide participant-centered education about PrEP and other HIV prevention options.
• Support participants interested in PrEP in identifying and addressing barriers to accessing care, including insurance applications and provider identification, as well as potential cost barriers.
• Build relationships with community organizations and healthcare providers to increase awareness of PrEP and available navigation services.
Community Outreach & Harm Reduction
• Conduct regular outreach in community settings where priority populations live, gather, socialize, or access services through nonjudgmental, educational conversations.
• Distribute harm reduction and safer-sex supplies in accordance with program guidelines.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with community partners and organizations.
Education, Events & Community Engagement
• Plan, organize, and participate in safe, sober social and educational events focused on HIV/HCV/STI prevention, sexual health, PrEP, and harm reduction.
• Participate in community events, outreach activities, tabling opportunities, and partner events.
• Participate in agency, program, partner, and community meetings that support collaboration and effective service delivery.
Documentation, Data & Compliance
• Complete required documentation accurately and within established program timelines.
• Enter and maintain required HIV prevention data in accordance with CDPHE, grant, program, and agency standards.
• Protect confidential and personally identifiable information in accordance with agency policy and applicable requirements.
Position Expectations:
Due to harm reduction services occurring both within the agency and throughout the community, this position requires flexibility in work location and scheduling.
• The Harm Reduction Coordinator must be able to:
• Work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Provide services at Empowerment locations as well as community and partner locations.
• Participate in outreach, educational activities, and community events.
• Work occasional evenings and weekends as program, outreach, and community-event needs require, with advance notice whenever reasonably possible.
• Travel locally between agency, outreach, partner, and specimen drop-off locations.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and participant confidentiality.
• Work respectfully with people from a wide range of backgrounds, identities, experiences, and stages of change.
• Maintain a trauma-informed, harm reduction-centered, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and gender-affirming approach.
Qualifications:
Required
• Basic understanding of harm reduction and PrEP/HIV prevention, or willingness and ability to develop the knowledge through training.
• Comfort discussing sexual health, HIV/STI prevention, substance use, and other sensitive topics without judgment.
• Comfort working with blood, urine, biological specimens, and testing materials.
• Ability to initiate conversations and build rapport with unfamiliar individuals.
• Ability to engage individuals in nontraditional or challenging community settings.
• Cultural humility and demonstrated ability to work respectfully with diverse communities.
• Ability to use computers and electronic systems for communication, documentation, and data entry.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, manage assigned responsibilities, and communicate when support is needed.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
Preferred
• Previous experience conducting HIV, HCV, or STI testing.
• Previous experience providing harm reduction, HIV prevention, sexual health, outreach, navigation, or community-based services.
• Knowledge of PrEP navigation and common barriers to HIV prevention and healthcare access.
• Experience working with PWUID, LGBTQIA+ communities, women, people experiencing homelessness, and other historically
