How much do stevedore jobs pay per hour?
What is a stevedore?
A stevedore is a dockworker responsible for loading and unloading cargo from ships at ports. They operate heavy machinery like cranes and forklifts to move containers and ensure goods are handled safely and efficiently. Stevedores also inspect cargo, secure it for transport, and follow safety regulations to prevent workplace accidents. The job requires physical strength, teamwork, and attention to detail to manage shipments effectively.
What does a stevedore do?
As a Stevedore, your workday generally revolves around the loading and unloading of cargo ships, which can involve operating heavy machinery, securing cargo, and coordinating with both dockworkers and ship crews. Shifts may run during the day or night, as cargo operations often occur outside standard business hours depending on shipping schedules. You'll typically work as part of a close-knit team where strong communication and coordination are essential to ensure safety and efficiency. The work environment is fast-paced and physically demanding, but offers valuable hands-on experience and opportunities to advance into supervisory or specialist roles within port operations. If you enjoy active, team-oriented work and want to be part of the global supply chain, this role can be both challenging and rewarding.
What skills and qualifications are needed to be a stevedore?
To thrive as a Stevedore, you need physical strength, manual dexterity, and familiarity with cargo handling procedures, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Operation of forklifts, cranes, and other heavy machinery—sometimes requiring OSHA certification or similar safety credentials—is commonly required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help individuals stand out in this position. These skills are vital to ensuring cargo is efficiently loaded and unloaded, while maintaining safety protocols and smooth port operations.
