Stern Man information

What is a stern man?

A Stern Man is a crew member on a lobster boat, primarily responsible for handling traps and sorting the catch. The name comes from their position at the stern (rear) of the vessel. Duties often include baiting and setting traps, measuring and banding lobsters, and assisting with general boat maintenance. This is a physically demanding job that requires early hours and the ability to work in challenging weather conditions. Stern Men are essential to the success of a lobstering operation and usually learn on the job from experienced captains.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a stern man on a lobster boat?

As a Stern Man on a lobster boat, your primary duties include baiting and setting traps, hauling lobster pots, sorting the catch, and ensuring that all equipment is properly cleaned and maintained. One of the main challenges is working in physically demanding and often harsh weather conditions, which requires stamina and resilience. Teamwork is essential, as you'll be working closely with the captain and other crew members in a fast-paced environment where clear communication and safety are paramount.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stern man, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stern Man, you need physical stamina, basic seamanship, and knowledge of fishing gear, typically acquired through hands-on experience or training in commercial fishing. Familiarity with marine safety equipment, hydraulic winches, and navigation systems is often required. Strong teamwork, quick decision-making, and resilience are vital soft skills for handling the demanding and sometimes hazardous work environment. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure safety, efficiency, and productivity on board a fishing vessel.
