JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the activities required to meet the sterile instrument and surgical equipment processing needs of the facility and/or other areas as directed. Under general direction of the Director of Sterile Processing, managers perform work ensuring that the operational performance and quality goals of the department are met.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
  • Experience
    5 years experience involving sterilization of instruments, equipment, and supplies or related experience in the operating room/acute hospital environment and
    3 years supervisory experience
  • Licenses and Certifications
    Must hold or attain three (3) certifications from the following credentialing organizations within 18 months of employment
    (CRCST) CRCST with Healthcare Processing Association (HSPA) or CBSPD equivalent within 1-1/2 Yrs and
    (CHL) CERTIFIED HEALTHCARE LEADER with Healthcare Processing Association (HSPA) or CBSPD equivalent within 1-1/2 Yrs and
    (CIS) CERTIFIED INSTRUMENT SPECIALST or Certified Endoscope Reprocessor with Healthcare Processing Association (HSPA) or CBSPD equivalent within 1-1/2 Yrs
Preferred
  • Education
    Bachelor's Degree in health science or related field
  • Experience
Sterile Processing leadership experience in a Level 1 trauma hospital.
JOB DUTIES
  • Manages Sterile Processing department personnel to achieve established operational goals
  • Interviews and provides input regarding hiring of all personnel for unit. Provides immediate counseling and constructive criticism and disciplinary interventions of personnel in private setting and in manner that is positive and respectful. Follows-up with accurate and timely reports to Director of Sterile Processing.
  • Conducts daily and/or shift by shift review of unit assignments, scheduling and staffing plans to ensure adequate coverage of unit and adherence to policies, procedures, and productivity targets. Revises unit assignments, schedules, and plans as necessary. Utilizes staffing patterns and guidelines to foster most cost effective option for providing adequate coverage for unit.
  • Generates and/or supervises generation, implementation and evaluation of occurrence reports and performance improvement activities as appropriate. Provides appropriate and timely follow-up and monitors occurrence reports and performance improvement activities and submits them to Director of Sterile Processing.
  • Directs and maintains quality control parameters for sterilization processes and ensures biological/mechanical testing is performed on all cleaning/sterilization equipment throughout the hospital. Develop and maintain related policies and procedures.
  • Maintains and monitors inventory levels of supplies and instruments.
  • Communicates effectively with all hospital personnel and industry representatives. Participates in identification and resolution of complaints regarding unit. Reports complaints and interventions to Director of Sterile Processing to allow adequate follow-up.
  • Assist with the human, fiscal, clinical, operational and quality management of department.
  • Seeks opportunities to teach, mentor, promote professional growth of personnel assigned to unit. Collaborates with Clinical Educators to assist in meeting educational needs of personnel assigned to unit.
  • Conducts staff and committee meetings and special projects such as educational, research and recruitment activities. Participates in routine interdisciplinary and special care conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
