Job description

Performs a variety of Central Sterile Processing functions such as cleaning, decontamination, inspection/assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution and reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.

(Performs other duties as assigned or required.)


- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of BronxCare Health System and its employees.


- Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contribution and participation includes data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, consistent adherence to the specific rules and regulations of the BronxCare Health System (a) Safety and Security Policies, (b) Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.

- Cleans and Decontaminates reusable instruments, Carts and equipment according to Manufacturers Instruction for Use (IFU). Operates and maintains decontamination equipment i.e. washer/disinfector, ultrasonic cleaners.


- Decontaminates, reprocesses, High Level Disinfects and maintain flexible endoscopes. Operates and maintains Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER) machine for endoscope reprocessing according to the IFU.


- Inspects instruments for cleanliness and functionality, Assembles and Packages instruments trays for sterilization
Inspects, Assembles and packages Code Carts and intubation boxes.


- Sets up case carts, picks instruments sets needed for OR cases, according to surgery schedule. Picks any additional instruments needed for add-on cases.

- Performs equipment distribution, case cart delivery and assists with routing maintenance of portable patient care Equipment.


- Assists in departmental cost containment efforts.


- Prepares and Sterilizes instruments according to the IFU and established guidelines. Understands the principles of sterilization techniques.


- Monitors, Documents and maintains appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies, as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors.
Scan, Input and Document reprocessing records in the SPM instrument Tracking system.

- Prepares and Sterilizes instruments according to the IFU and established guidelines. Understands the principles of sterilization techniques.


- Operates Steam Sterilizers (Autoclave) and Hydrogen Peroxide/gas plasma (Sterrad) for High and Low temperature sterilization.

- Performs Equipment function tests and quality control monitoring tests such as Biological, chemical and Bowie-Dick Tests as well as washer/disinfector efficacy tests.


- Monitors, Documents and maintains appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies, as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors.
Scan, Input and Document reprocessing records in the SPM instrument Tracking system.


- Experience in Central Sterile Processing in health care/hospital environment preferred.

- Must be familiar with equipment, instruments, procedures and techniques in Central Sterile. 

- Certification in Sterile Processing from either IAHCSMM or CBSPD

- High School or GED

- Knowledge of Central Sterile Equipment and Instruments

- Computer literate
