Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST/HSPA Certified)

Location: East Orange VA Medical Center – East Orange, NJ
Job Type: Full-Time Contract
Schedule: Monday-Friday (40 Hours/Week)
Compensation: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour, depending on experience
Shift Options:

  • Shift 1: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Shift 2: 11:00 AM – 7:30 PM
  • Shift 3: 3:30 PM – 12:00 AM

We are a growing federal healthcare staffing company dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare professionals to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal healthcare agencies. We are seeking experienced and dedicated Sterile Processing Technicians (SPTs) to support the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) department at the East Orange VA Medical Center.

This is an excellent opportunity to serve our nation's Veterans while working in a highly respected federal healthcare environment.

Position Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician will be responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, inspection, assembly, packaging, storage, and distribution of reusable medical equipment and surgical instrumentation in accordance with VA policies, AAMI standards, manufacturer instructions for use (IFU), and infection control guidelines.

The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, attention to detail, and experience in high-volume hospital sterile processing operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME) and surgical instrumentation.
  • Operate sterilization and high-level disinfection equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Steam Sterilizers
    • Sterrad
    • V-PRO
    • Medivators
    • Trophon
    • Cidex OPA
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and damage; identify and replace damaged instruments as appropriate.
  • Assemble surgical instrument trays according to count sheets and manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform biological monitoring, Bowie-Dick testing, chemical indicator testing, and quality assurance documentation.
  • Process flexible endoscopes in accordance with manufacturer IFUs and facility protocols.
  • Utilize instrument tracking systems, including CensiTrac or comparable systems.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control, OSHA, Joint Commission, and VA standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and workload capture records.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgical services, nursing staff, and other clinical departments.
  • Adhere to all patient safety, privacy, and confidentiality requirements.
Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one (1) of the following requirements:

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST); or
  • Certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA); or
  • Graduate of an accredited Sterile Processing or Central Service Technician program with at least two (2) years of SPS experience; or
  • Minimum of five (5) years of verifiable Sterile Processing experience in an acute care hospital setting.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent hospital Sterile Processing experience preferred.
  • Experience processing instrumentation for multiple surgical specialties including General Surgery, Orthopedics, ENT, Urology, Dental, GYN, Vascular, Robotics, and Podiatry.
  • Knowledge of sterilization principles, infection prevention practices, and aseptic techniques.
  • Experience with instrument tracking systems such as CensiTrac preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and transport instrument trays and carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in hot, humid, and fast-paced environments while wearing required PPE.
