What is a STEM OPT Extension?

A STEM OPT Extension job is a position that qualifies for the 24-month extension of Optional Practical Training (OPT) for students who have earned a degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field. The job must be directly related to the student’s STEM degree and be with an employer enrolled in the E-Verify program. The role should provide formal training and learning opportunities. Additionally, the student and employer must complete the Form I-983 training plan to ensure compliance with STEM OPT requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a STEM OPT Extension?

The job title 'Stem Opt Extension' refers to a specific work authorization for F-1 visa students in STEM fields, not an actual professional occupation. It is important for individuals seeking a STEM OPT Extension to have earned a qualifying STEM degree and secure employment with an E-Verify employer. Knowledge of immigration processes, compliance documentation, and liaising with school officials is crucial. These skills ensure legal adherence and smooth transition to gain relevant work experience in the U.S.

What challenges do international students face when applying for a STEM OPT Extension with a U.S. employer?

International students seeking positions under the STEM OPT Extension often face challenges such as finding employers enrolled in E-Verify and navigating complex visa documentation requirements. It is important to maintain clear communication with both the university’s international office and the employer’s HR team to ensure all deadlines and compliance steps are met. Additionally, students may experience uncertainty about long-term employment due to the temporary nature of the extension, but being proactive and staying informed about immigration policies can help manage these challenges. Working with supportive employers who understand the STEM OPT process can make the transition smoother and help with future career planning.

Can I work during the STEM OPT extension?

Yes, STEM OPT extension allows F-1 students to work in their field of study for up to 24 months after their initial OPT. The employment must be directly related to the degree, and the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, with the student reporting employment and any changes through SEVIS. During this period, students can work full-time or part-time, provided they meet all program requirements.

How many jobs can I have on STEM OPT?

On STEM OPT, you can work for multiple employers, but each job must be directly related to your STEM degree and registered in E-Verify. You are required to report all employment through your SEVIS record and ensure each employer complies with STEM OPT requirements. There is no specific limit on the number of jobs, but all employment must meet program criteria and be approved by your designated school official (DSO).

Which companies hire STEM OPT extension students?

Many companies across various industries hire STEM OPT extension students, especially those in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. These companies often include technology firms, engineering firms, research institutions, and large corporations with dedicated international talent programs, and they typically require relevant skills, degrees, and compliance with OPT regulations.
