Steel Wire information

What is a steel wire worker?

Steel wire workers are skilled tradespeople who specialize in working with steel wire products. Their tasks may include manufacturing, installing, and repairing steel wire components such as cables, mesh, fencing, and reinforcements used in construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure projects. They often use specialized tools to cut, bend, and join steel wire, ensuring it meets the required specifications for strength and durability. Safety and precision are critical aspects of their job, as their work often supports structural integrity or secure enclosures.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work as a steel wire production operator?

To thrive as a Steel Wire Production Operator, you need a solid understanding of industrial manufacturing processes, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with wire drawing machines, quality control systems, and safety protocols is essential, and some roles may require specific safety or machinery operation certifications. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help operators efficiently manage production and address issues quickly. These skills are vital to ensure product quality, maintain safety standards, and achieve production targets in a demanding manufacturing environment.

What challenges do professionals face in steel wire manufacturing or processing roles?

Professionals in steel wire manufacturing or processing often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict quality standards, handling complex machinery, and ensuring safety in environments with heavy equipment. They must stay vigilant against defects and interruptions in the production process, as these can impact both efficiency and product quality. Additionally, collaboration with quality control, maintenance, and logistics teams is essential to ensure smooth operations and timely deliveries, offering many opportunities to learn and advance in technical or supervisory positions.

Job description

Welder / Fabricator - Contract - Start ASAP

Job Description

This role focuses on the safe, efficient, and high-quality fitting and joining of skylights, smoke vents, and related components using established fabrication and welding processes. You will work on a day shift in a production environment, using wire-feed welding equipment and fabrication tools to build parts to precise specifications and prepare them for assembly.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and securely move required materials into and out of the welding area using a pallet jack, and operate a forklift when certified and licensed.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to tacking and welding using fixtures, clamps, carpenter’s squares, combination squares, and tape measures.
  • Operate manual aluminum and steel wire-feed welding equipment to properly join metal components according to training guidelines and quality requirements.
  • Examine work pieces visually and with tape measures, straight edges, squares, and templates to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Monitor the welding process carefully to prevent overheating, warpage, distortion, or burning through materials.
  • Detect faulty welding machine operation or defective materials and promptly notify supervisors.
  • Stack and secure finished parts correctly on pallets for transfer to the assembly department.
  • Verify that counts of finished products are accurate and ensure they are marked or tagged with order numbers and other required identifying information.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area that is free of safety hazards.
  • Follow all established safety procedures for wire-feed equipment operation, material handling, and work area organization.

Essential Skills

  • Basic fabricating aptitude with either a 2-year technical school degree or at least 2 years of related work experience.
  • Experience with MIG welding in a production or fabrication environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and manufacturing drawings accurately.
  • Knowledge and experience in safety requirements for operating and maintaining wire-feed welding equipment.
  • Understanding of safe material handling and movement, including proper lifting, bending, and material manipulation techniques.
  • Ability to maintain a safely organized work area.
  • Knowledge of wire and filler materials used for joining aluminum and galvanized steel.
  • Working knowledge of fixturing, clamping, and weld setup parameters such as voltage, amperage, and wire speed.
  • Ability to use and understand basic measuring instruments, including tape measures, straight edges, squares, and templates.
  • Proficiency in assigned welding techniques and ability to meet internal quality standards.
  • Knowledge of finish grinding tools and techniques for post-weld finishing.
  • Ability to complete and pass an internal pre-employment welding test.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a high-volume production or fabrication environment.
  • Hands-on experience with inspection of welded and fabricated parts for quality and accuracy.
  • Comfort working with both aluminum and steel materials.
  • Familiarity with smoke vent and skylight component fabrication is a plus.
  • Forklift certification and licensing for material movement is an advantage.

Why Work Here?

You will join a production team that values safety, craftsmanship, and consistent quality. The environment offers steady day-shift work with opportunities for overtime, allowing you to build your skills in welding and fabrication while contributing to a reliable, well-structured operation. You can expect clear processes, defined quality standards, and a culture that emphasizes safe practices and pride in well-made products.

Work Environment

This position operates in a production fabrication facility on a day shift schedule, typically from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with overtime available as needed. You will work in and around welding and assembly areas, using manual aluminum and steel wire-feed welding equipment, pallet jacks, and potentially forklifts if certified. The environment involves regular material handling, standing, bending, and moving components throughout the workday. Work areas are organized to support safe operation, with a focus on maintaining cleanliness and minimizing hazards.
