Job Title: Steel Slitter Machine Operator – 2nd ShiftJob DescriptionThis role operates and assists with precision steel coil slitting equipment in a heavy industrial steel processing center. You will set up and run slitter machines, measure and inspect material using precision tools, handle steel coils and sheets, and ensure safe, accurate, and efficient production on a 2nd shift schedule.
Responsibilities
- Operate and assist with steel slitter machines to process steel coils into precise widths within tight tolerances.
- Use micrometers, calipers, and tape measures to perform accurate measurements on steel coils and sheets throughout the production process.
- Feed strips of steel into the recoiler and monitor the line to maintain proper tracking of steel during processing.
- Set up and change out slitter heads, including configuring slitter heads for specific jobs and ensuring correct tooling alignment.
- Crop off tail ends of heavy gauge finished products safely and efficiently.
- Log all processed coils in the coil log and maintain accurate production and quality records.
- Observe and inspect material for any defects, irregularities, or quality issues, and report or correct them as needed.
- Lift and handle sheets of steel, including lifting materials up to 100+ lbs as required by the production process.
- Operate overhead cranes to move large rolls of steel and coils safely within the facility.
- Perform banding of finished coils and use packing lines for quick banding and packaging of finished products.
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment to move steel coils, sheets, and finished products.
- Assist with other machinery and processes as needed, including grinders, band saws, blanking, and cut-to-length operations.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines in a heavy industrial environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to facility rules.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and support continuous improvement in production efficiency and product quality.
Essential Skills- 2+ years of experience assisting with or operating a steel slitter machine.
- Hands-on experience working with sheet metal and steel coils in a steel processing environment.
- Ability to set up slitter heads and change out slitter heads for different jobs.
- Ability to read and use a tape measure, caliper, and micrometer accurately.
- Experience working in a heavy industrial environment, including around large rolls of steel and moving equipment.
- Banding experience for securing finished coils and products.
- Overhead crane experience for safely moving steel coils and large materials.
- Forklift experience in a production or steel processing setting.
- Mechanically inclined with the ability to understand and adjust production machinery.
- Ability to lift sheets of steel weighing up to 100+ lbs safely and repeatedly.
- Strong attention to detail for measuring, logging coils, and inspecting material for defects.
- Comfort working on a 2nd shift schedule (3:00 pm – 11:30 pm).
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience with precision steel coil slitting in a full loop system with drag pad and roll tension stands.
- Familiarity with production environments that require camber-free products and tight width tolerances (within approximately +/- 0.005").
- General labor experience in manufacturing or industrial settings.
- Experience with banding machines and packing lines for finished products.
- Cut-to-length experience and exposure to blanking operations.
- Experience operating or assisting with additional equipment such as grinders and band saws.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment within a mid-sized facility.
- Strong safety mindset and willingness to follow established procedures and best practices.

Work Environment
The role is based in a steel processing center that handles large rolls of steel using overhead cranes, slitters, banding machines, forklifts, grinders, band saws, blanking lines, and cut-to-length equipment. The slitter line provides precision steel coil slitting with full loop capabilities and a combination of drag pad and roll tension stands to deliver camber-free products and precise widths. The facility operates as a heavy industrial environment with approximately 33 employees, where you work around moving equipment, large coils, and high-volume production. This is a 2nd shift position, typically from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required, including steel-toe footwear, and the dress code aligns with a heavy industrial and safety-focused setting.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.72 - $28.22/hr.
