Job description

Lapham-Hickey Steel Corporation is seeking a full-time STEEL SLITTER OPERATOR to join our Bedford Park plant team and share our vision; to create value for our customers, employees, suppliers, and shareholders through the highest quality steel products and strong partnerships. Purpose/Summary: The Slitter Operatorโ€™s main responsibility is to set up and operate a slitter machine according to customer specifications and work orders. Detail, safety, and attentiveness are critical to regular equipment inspection and the ability to measure dimensions, align parts and produce material according to production instructions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect arbor and overarm setups to ensure compliance with production instructions
  • Reconcile coil identity to production and load coil
  • Thread coil through slitter-head, cropping all non-complying material
  • Review and record gauge, width, hardness, camber, burr, and surface condition and ensure compliance with production instructions
  • Set gauge monitoring system (if applicable) and ensure gauge calibration
  • Thread steel mults into recoiler
  • Adjust leveler to correct any shape defects as needed through slitting
  • Run coils at maximum speed, ensuring efficiency and accuracy
  • Monitor strip conditions, gauge as required, and ensure customer specifications
  • Band and identify slit mults in compliance with production and complete all documentation
  • Remove scrap from machine regularly and empty hoppers as needed
  • Communicate non-compliance production or quality problems to supervisor and/or shift lead

Qualifications; Knowledge, Abilities, Skills:

  • Knowledge of current crane and forklift operation preferred
  • Ability to perform complete setup and operational tasks of slitting to ensure compliance with the customer specifications
  • Ability to read and follow all work order instructions and complete necessary documentation
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to cooperate with co-workers and supervisors/management of the production team
  • Ability to work with little supervision
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
