Come join the team at United Steel, New England's largest fabricator and erector of structural steel and miscellaneous metals! 

United Steel is currently seeking a Field Foreman for Structural Steel Field Operations   This position is responsible for Leads and controls skilled labor and work crews engaged in all activities concerned with the erection works aspects of the project. Ability to optimize resources (manpower, equipment and materials) to ensure efficient and timely completion of the works.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Able to demonstrate good organizational skills, following policies, procedures and work practices, and developing improvements where necessary.
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow method statements and procedures. Competent in reading and understanding blueprints, specifications, drawings, and all other discipline related project and engineering documentation. Keeps records of all work completed and completion of “Action Lists”.
  • Build respect of his workforce and develops excellent working relationships with all other department personnel, customers, and other trades.
  • Must be a good communicator. Able to give instructions in an efficient and effective way to his workforce. Liaises with other discipline foremen to ensure the optimum utilization of available work, with the overall objective of successful completion of the project.
  • Leads and supervises workers engaged in the construction of buildings and other structural works and assists the Field Superintendent in the coordination and performance or related activities such as layout and fabrication of structural.
  • Supervises crews to raise, place and unite girders, columns and other structural steel members to form completed structures. Sets up lifting and hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel members. Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel.
  • Ensures that work crews are properly supplied with tools, equipment and materials. Prevents wastage and misuse of equipment, materials and tools. Supervises work crews to best utilize manpower and materials, exercised discipline at the work site to prevent absenteeism, unsafe work practices and idleness.
  • Familiar with all Company QA/QC and safety procedures / regulations and strictly enforces them with the workforce under his responsibility.
  • Complies with the highest level of safety during all stages of project execution to avoid any type of incidents and or accidents. Take reasonable care of own health and safety and that of others in the workplace.
  • Identifies, formulates and implements “on‐the‐job” training programs for the workforce under his responsibility.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to 5+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation and willingness to travel to jobsites.
  • Extensive familiarity with structural erection works with at least 5 years of experience as Foreman or Lead position.
  • Directly supervises employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Basic shop math, blueprint reading, reading, writing, and interpret English, basic mechanical skills, effectively utilize lifting devices, ability to interpret shop paperwork and work instructions, ability to verify log and procedures for accuracy.
  • Skills Desired: strong attention to detail, ability to multitask, good communications skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety rules, simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, noise and vibration.
