Steel Internships information

What is a steel internship?

Steel internships are temporary positions offered by companies in the steel industry to students or recent graduates. These internships provide hands-on experience in areas such as manufacturing, engineering, quality control, or business operations related to steel production. Interns gain practical skills, industry knowledge, and exposure to real-world projects, which can help them decide if a career in the steel sector is right for them. Steel internships often serve as a stepping stone to full-time employment in the industry.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a steel internship?

During a steel internship, you can expect to work on a range of projects that may include assisting with quality control, shadowing engineers on production lines, helping analyze data on material properties, and participating in safety audits. Interns often collaborate with experienced engineers, production teams, and quality assurance staff, gaining exposure to both technical and operational aspects of steel manufacturing. You may also be involved in process improvement initiatives or support ongoing research and development projects. This hands-on experience is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the industry's workflow and prepare you for potential full-time opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a steel internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Steel Internship, you typically need a background in engineering or materials science, along with foundational knowledge of metallurgy and manufacturing processes. Familiarity with CAD software, lab testing equipment, and safety protocols is often required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with engineers and plant staff. These competencies help interns contribute meaningfully to projects, ensure safety, and facilitate learning in industrial steel environments.

What is the difference between Steel Internships vs Steel Technician?

AspectSteel InternshipsSteel Technician
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduates of engineering, metallurgy, or related fieldsAssociate's or bachelor's degree in metallurgy, materials science, or related technical field

Job description

New Millennium

What Does Steel Dynamics Do?

Steel Dynamics is a leading industrial metals solutions company that produces lower-carbon, high-quality steel products primarily from recycled scrap. Operating through a circular manufacturing model, the company manufactures a wide range of steel products including flat roll, structural, and long products for industries such as construction, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. In addition to steel production, Steel Dynamics operates metals recycling facilities, steel fabrication plants, and aluminum production operations, serving customers across North America with a focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.

This is a New Millennium Position. Who is New Millennium?

A division of Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI), New Millennium was founded in 1999 in Butler, Indiana, with one clear mission: To be a trusted collaborator for the design, engineering, and supply of structural steel joists and deck. Today, 25 years later, we’re one of the largest providers of high-performance structural steel joists, joist girders, and deck solutions for commercial steel construction projects.

What Makes This Internship Different?

The Structural Engineering Internship at Steel Dynamics is unique because interns are not limited to observing or performing routine tasks, they are directly involved in projects that impact production, safety, and long-term infrastructure reliability. Unlike many programs that focus solely on classroom-style assignments, SDI interns gain hands-on experience in both design and field work, from analyzing and drafting structural components to inspecting and reinforcing critical infrastructure in active industrial environments. This combination of office and on-site project involvement provides students with exposure to the full lifecycle of civil engineering work in a manufacturing setting. Many interns also work alongside contractors, operators, and engineers, giving them a broader perspective of how civil engineering integrates with operations and business strategy. The result is an experience that goes beyond traditional internships by preparing students to solve real-world challenges and contribute measurable value from day one.

Internship Location

This internship is located at the New Millennium facility located in Lake City, FL. This internship will take place in Summer 2027.

Internship Benefits

  • Furnished Housing Free of Cost

  • Employee Assistance Program
    • Up to five free visits per issue, per year for counseling, legal advice, financial guidance, and other daily living resources.
  • Intern Extravaganza
    • A two-day event at company headquarters featuring facility tours, networking with company leaders, cultural immersion, and connecting with other interns from across the country.
  • Competitive Pay
    • Competitive hourly wages for all internship positions, rewarding the value interns bring to the company.

What Are My Responsibilities as a Structural Engineering Intern at Steel Dynamics?

  • Apply engineering principles to support ongoing design, analysis, and construction projects ranging from community churches, schools, offices and retail buildings to athletic facilities and fieldhouses to massive warehouses and data centers covering acres of land for the world’s largest distribution and data storage companies.

  • Assist in evaluating and designing structural components such as platforms, open-web steel joists and girders, and welded and bolted connections.

About Steel Dynamics

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Steel Dynamics is one of the largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with an estimated steelmaking and coating capacity of approximately 13 million tons, and facilities located throughout the United States and in Mexico. We operate using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality steel using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology with recycled ferrous scrap as the primary input. Our circular economy is powered by our three primary operating platforms: steel, metals recycling, and steel fabrication. Our steel operations produce steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products, and specialty steel sections. Our metals recycling operations collect and process ferrous and nonferrous scrap from manufacturing and end-of-life items, such as automobiles, appliances, and machinery. This processed scrap is then sold to end-users for reuse, including our EAF steel mills, which produce new steel from the scrapped material. We sell a meaningful amount of steel to our own steel fabrication operations that in turn produce and sell structural steel joist and deck building systems to consumers.
