What is a steel CNC machine operator?

Steel CNC Machine Operators are skilled technicians who set up, operate, and maintain computer numerical control (CNC) machines to cut, shape, and finish steel components. They interpret technical drawings, select appropriate tools, and ensure that the machines produce parts to precise specifications. Operators also monitor the machining process, perform routine maintenance, and troubleshoot issues to maintain efficiency and safety in a manufacturing environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a steel CNC machine operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Steel CNC Machine Operator, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with vocational training often preferred. Familiarity with CNC programming software, blueprint reading, and operating various CNC machinery is essential, and certifications like NIMS can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production of steel components in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by steel CNC machine operators, and how can they be overcome?

Steel CNC Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision during long production runs, troubleshooting machine errors, and working with various steel grades that may require different settings. Staying attentive to machine sounds and output, performing regular maintenance, and proactively communicating with the maintenance team can help address many of these issues. Additionally, operators benefit from continuous training and collaboration with quality control personnel to ensure products meet strict specifications.

What is the difference between Steel Cnc Machine Operator vs Steel Fabricator?

AspectSteel Cnc Machine OperatorSteel Fabricator
CredentialsHigh school diploma, CNC operator certificationsHigh school diploma, welding certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, machine shopsFabrication shops, construction sites
Job Focus Operating CNC machines to cut and shape steel Assembling, welding, and fabricating steel structures
Tools & EquipmentCNC machines, measuring toolsWelding equipment, hand tools, cutting torches

While both roles work with steel in manufacturing settings, a Steel Cnc Machine Operator primarily operates CNC machines to precisely cut and shape steel components. In contrast, a Steel Fabricator focuses on assembling and welding steel parts into structures. The roles differ in technical focus, tools used, and daily tasks, but both are essential in steel manufacturing industries.

Are Steel CNC Machine Operators in high demand?

Steel CNC Machine Operators are in high demand due to the ongoing need for precision manufacturing in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and construction. Skilled operators with knowledge of CAD/CAM software and safety certifications are particularly sought after, and employment opportunities are expected to grow as manufacturing continues to modernize and automate.

Where do steel CNC machine operators make the most money?

Steel CNC machine operators tend to earn higher wages in regions with a strong manufacturing industry and higher living costs, such as industrial hubs or areas with advanced manufacturing sectors. Factors like experience, certifications, and proficiency with CNC programming can also influence earning potential, regardless of location.

Key responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and monitor the Voortman CNC fabrication system to produce structural steel components.

  • Inspect finished components for dimensional accuracy and quality using precision measuring tools.

Job description

Be the First to Run Our Brand New Voortman. Own It From Day One.

PVS Structures is bringing in a new Voortman CNC fabrication system — and we're looking for the right operator to run it. This is a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a state-of-the-art structural steel processing line and become the go-to expert on one of the most advanced beam fabrication platforms in the industry.

If you have experience operating a Voortman or similar CNC structural steel equipment — or you're a highly skilled CNC machinist with a strong structural steel background and the drive to learn — we want to talk.

The Details

  • Starting pay: $22.00–$26.00/hr depending on experience
  • Hours: Mon–Thu, 5:30 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Schedule: 4-day work week
  • Home by early afternoon every day

About the Voortman

The Voortman is a fully automated, multi-process CNC fabrication system designed specifically for structural steel — including beams, columns, channels, and angles. It combines drilling, milling, scribing, sawing, and coping operations in a single automated line, controlled through advanced CNC software. Operating a Voortman requires a strong understanding of structural steel, CNC programming logic, tooling selection, and quality inspection — all in a high-output production environment.

What You'll Do

  • Set up, operate, and monitor the Voortman CNC fabrication system to produce structural steel components including beams, columns, and sections
  • Load raw structural steel material and manage the automated feed system for efficient production runs
  • Read and interpret structural steel blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications to verify program parameters and job requirements
  • Select appropriate tooling, drill bits, and cutting speeds for each job and material type
  • Verify CNC programs against drawings and job specs before and during production
  • Inspect finished components for dimensional accuracy and quality using precision measuring tools including calipers, tape measures, and gauges
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting on the machine to minimize downtime
  • Identify and communicate programming or setup issues to the supervisor proactively
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with company safety and ISO standards
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and scheduling teams to keep jobs on track

What We're Looking For

  • 1–3 years of CNC machining or CNC operation experience — structural steel fabrication experience strongly preferred
  • Prior experience operating a Voortman, Peddinghaus, Ficep, or similar structural steel CNC system is a significant advantage
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel blueprints, shop drawings, and weld symbols
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools — calipers, micrometers, tape measures
  • Strong understanding of machine operations, tooling, and cutting parameters
  • Basic familiarity with CAD/CAM software is beneficial but not required — we can train the right candidate
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach
  • Reliable, safety-focused, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or vocational training is a plus
