What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a stealth mode startup, and why are they important?

To thrive in a stealth mode startup, you need entrepreneurial agility, a strong background in your area of expertise (such as engineering, product, or business development), and proven experience in early-stage environments. Familiarity with rapid prototyping tools, lean startup methodologies, and collaborative project management systems is highly valuable. Exceptional problem-solving, adaptability, and the ability to maintain confidentiality under pressure set standout contributors apart. These skills are crucial for navigating the uncertainty, fast pace, and need for discretion typical of stealth startups, ensuring effective execution and competitive advantage.

What is a Stealth Mode Startup?

A Stealth Mode Startup is a company that operates in secrecy to avoid public attention while developing its product or service. This approach helps protect intellectual property, avoid tipping off competitors, and build hype before a formal launch. Stealth mode can involve limited public information, anonymous teams, or even generic company names. The goal is to ensure a competitive advantage and maximize impact when the company eventually reveals itself to the market.

What unique challenges can employees expect when joining a company in 'stealth mode'?

Working at a stealth mode startup often means operating in a highly confidential environment where information is tightly controlled, and public visibility is limited. Employees may face challenges such as ambiguity around the company's long-term vision, rapidly shifting priorities, and the need to adapt to evolving roles as the team scales. Collaboration typically happens within a close-knit, multidisciplinary team, requiring flexibility, proactive communication, and a comfort with uncertainty. Despite these challenges, stealth mode roles offer the chance to directly influence foundational decisions and experience accelerated professional growth as the company emerges from stealth.

Job description

Director of Engineering Location: Dallas, TX
Clearance: Active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance required; U.S. citizenship required
Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, with full benefits The Company & Mission: A stealth-mode defense technology company developing a flagship platform designed to meaningfully shift the balance of any conflict in favor of the U.S. and its allies. The company is well-funded, the platform is already developed, and customer demand is strong. This is a chance to build and lead an elite engineering team on one of the most consequential defense programs of our time. What This Role is All About: The Director of Engineering will lead the U.S. integration effort for the company's flagship platform. You will map customer requirements to actionable engineering changes, lead the team that executes them, and serve as the primary engineering interface with U.S. military customers. This is a ground-floor leadership opportunity — without ground-floor risk — to build your team and leave your mark on a platform with proven demand. What You'll Be Doing:
• Lead and manage a cross-functional engineering team spanning mechanical, electrical, software, and systems disciplines
• Translate U.S. customer requirements into actionable engineering roadmaps and oversee their execution
• Serve as the primary engineering interface with U.S. military customers, ensuring the flagship platform meets operational requirements
• Drive C2 integration, software development, resilient navigation, tactical communications, and SATCOM infrastructure efforts
• Oversee hardware/software integration and mechanical integration workstreams
• Proactively identify technical and programmatic risks; propose and implement solutions
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Supply Chain, Production, and Business Development to ensure engineering decisions align with business objectives
• Serve as a cultural leader for the engineering team — direct, kind, and hardworking What You Bring: • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
• 5+ years of experience in defense engineering, systems integration, or related field
• 3+ years working on an engineering team focused on defensive and/or offensive missile systems
• Demonstrated experience leading or managing engineering teams
• Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle processes
• Experience interfacing directly with U.S. military customers
• Familiarity with C2 systems, cybersecurity, and INFOSEC/OPSEC standards
• Experience with resilient navigation solutions (GNSS, anti-jam, contested electromagnetic environments)
• Familiarity with tactical communications systems (MANET, LOS comms, RF)
• Experience with SATCOM infrastructure and IP network configuration
• Active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance required prior to start; U.S. citizenship required Bonus Points: • Experience at a defense prime — and a desire to leave the bureaucracy behind
• Familiarity with hardware/software integration and mechanical systems in a fast-moving, resource-constrained environment
• Track record of building engineering teams from the ground up Benefits: • Competitive compensation and full benefits package
• Full-time, salaried position
