What is a Statistical Signal Processing job?

A Statistical Signal Processing job involves analyzing signals using probabilistic and statistical methods to extract useful information, reduce noise, and make predictions. Professionals in this field work with algorithms for applications in communications, radar, audio processing, finance, and biomedical engineering. They use tools like Bayesian estimation, Kalman filtering, and spectral analysis to enhance signal interpretation and decision-making. The role often requires expertise in mathematics, programming, and data analysis to develop efficient signal processing techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Statistical Signal Processing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Statistical Signal Processing, you need strong quantitative and analytical abilities, a background in mathematics or electrical engineering, and experience with probability, statistics, and signal processing concepts. Proficiency with programming languages such as MATLAB or Python, as well as familiarity with simulation tools and relevant certifications like Certified Signal Processing Professional (CSPP), is highly valuable. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork skills help you excel in cross-functional project environments. These competencies are crucial for accurately analyzing data, developing robust models, and delivering effective solutions to complex signal processing challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Statistical Signal Processing roles?

One common challenge is managing noisy or incomplete data, which requires advanced statistical techniques to extract meaningful information from real-world signals. Professionals in this field often need to stay updated with rapidly evolving algorithms and technologies, which can demand ongoing learning and adaptation. Additionally, collaborating across interdisciplinary teams—including software developers, engineers, and scientists—requires clear communication of complex concepts. By developing strong analytical and teamwork skills, you can effectively address these challenges and contribute valuable insights to your organization.

Job description

Responsibilities
As a Signal Processing Software Engineer with Sabre Systems, you will be supporting the Airborne Acoustic Signal Processing (AASP) team that's developing and integrating software and tools in support of one of the Navy's most technologically sophisticated aircraft platforms, the P-8A.The selected applicant will support development for the Many-Channel Programmable Acoustic Processor Stimulator (McPAPS) and the operational acoustics software on the P-8A aircraft.
McPAPS is used to stimulate NAVAIR Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) acoustic sensor processing systems. The signal generation capabilities of McPAPS are used to test how well acoustic systems perform with specific input signals. The selected applicant will apply knowledge of computer science concepts and techniques, mathematics, and methods of statistical analysis to develop software to perform acoustic signal simulation to the P-8A Poseidon Maritime Surveillance and Patrol Aircraft. The Software Support Activity also supports and maintains the Operational Signal and Information Processing components in the platform.
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Analyze user needs and develop software solutions, applying principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis
  • Update software or enhance existing software capabilities using C/C++
  • Writing and maintaining functional/implementation specifications
  • Apply knowledge of computer science concepts and techniques, mathematics, and methods of statistical analysis to develop software to perform acoustic signal simulation
  • May work with computer hardware engineers to integrate hardware and software systems, and develop specifications and performance requirements
  • May maintain databases within an application area
  • Utilize tools such as Matlab, Python, GIT, and Visual Studio
  • Utilize Windows and Linux operating systems

Qualifications
Requirements:
  • Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics and minimum 3 years of signal processing related experience
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities to develop and sustain software that performs signal processing using C/C++ or working from Matlab prototypes.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Linux as development environments.
  • Prior experience in developing and maintaining requirement documentation
  • Knowledge of Digital Signal Processing & Communications Concepts:
    • FIR/IIR Filtering
    • Multi-Rate Filtering
    • Analog/Digital Communications (FM/FSK/GFSK)
    • FFT/Correlation Analysis
