What does a Statistical Process Control Engineer do?

A Statistical Process Control (SPC) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that monitor and control manufacturing processes using statistical methods. They analyze data to identify trends, reduce process variation, and improve product quality. SPC Engineers work closely with production teams to ensure processes remain stable, efficient, and in compliance with industry standards. Their role often involves training staff in SPC techniques and troubleshooting quality issues using data-driven approaches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Statistical Process Control Engineer?

To thrive as a Statistical Process Control Engineer, you need a solid background in statistics, process engineering, and quality management, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SPC software (such as Minitab or JMP), Six Sigma methodologies, and quality system certifications like ASQ are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are vital to maintain product quality, optimize processes, and drive continuous improvement within manufacturing or production environments.

How does a Statistical Process Control Engineer typically collaborate with production and quality teams to drive process improvements?

A Statistical Process Control Engineer regularly works alongside both production and quality assurance teams to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and implement data-driven improvements. They analyze real-time data from manufacturing processes, facilitate root cause analysis sessions, and communicate findings through reports or presentations. Collaboration often includes training team members on SPC tools and methodologies, as well as guiding them in using statistical techniques to monitor and control process variability. This cross-functional teamwork ensures that process adjustments are both technically sound and operationally practical, leading to sustained quality improvements.

What is the difference between Statistical Process Control Engineer vs Quality Engineer?

AspectStatistical Process Control EngineerQuality Engineer
Primary FocusMonitoring and controlling manufacturing processes using statistical methodsEnsuring overall product quality through testing, inspection, and process improvements
CertificationsSix Sigma, Statistical Process Control (SPC) certificationsSix Sigma, Quality Management certifications (e.g., CQE)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, process development labsQuality departments, production facilities
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, electronicsManufacturing, healthcare, aerospace

While both roles focus on improving product quality, the Statistical Process Control Engineer specializes in using statistical tools to monitor and control manufacturing processes, whereas the Quality Engineer oversees broader quality assurance activities, including testing and compliance. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What is statistical process control in engineering?

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a method used by engineers, including those in quality and manufacturing roles, to monitor and control a process through statistical analysis. It involves collecting data from production processes, using control charts to detect variations, and ensuring consistent product quality by identifying and addressing issues early. SPC tools like Pareto charts and process capability analysis are commonly employed to maintain process stability and improve efficiency.

Job description

ABOUT LVT
LVT is redefining how businesses operate in the physical world, moving beyond traditional security solutions to deliver AI-driven, actionable intelligence that makes sites smarter, safer, and more secure. Since pioneering our first mobile, solar-powered units, our commitment to scrappy, hands-on innovation has made us an established leader and one of the fastest-growing companies in intelligent site technology. We are building the next generation of solutions-from our physical units in the field to a powerful Agentic AI platform-that allows our customers to gain unprecedented visibility and control over safety, compliance, and operations. This is your chance to join a cutting-edge team that isn't just watching the world change, but actively building the technology that is changing it.
We're a team that's focused on growth and innovation, and we're proud that our crew, products, and leadership are being recognized for it.
  • A Top-Tier Growth Company: Named one of the Financial Times' Fastest Growing Companies 2025 and #10 on the Inc. 5000 Rocky Mountain Regional list for 2025.
  • Innovative Leadership: Our CEO, Ryan Porter, was named an EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2025, and our CTO, Steve Lindsey, was inducted into the Silicon Slopes CTO Hall of Fame in 2024.
  • Product & Software Excellence: We were named one of The Software Report's Top 100 Software Companies of 2023 and are a winner of the Security Today Govies Award for 2025.

ABOUT THIS ROLE
As a Quality Engineer at LVT, you will play a key role in ensuring the performance, yield, and reliability of our production operations. Operating with moderate autonomy on the manufacturing floor, you will solve intermediate technical challenges across electro-mechanical assemblies, lead root-cause analysis, and help optimize automated test systems. Working closely with Manufacturing and Hardware Engineering, your analytical insights and hands-on execution will directly drive continuous improvement and overall process quality across our production lines.
This role is based full-time on-site out of our manufacturing facility in Spanish Fork, Utah, with no routine travel required.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Investigate & Resolve Quality Issues: Perform root-cause analysis on recurring electromechanical component and assembly failures using standard methodology (e.g., 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone) to resolve Corrective Action Reports (CARs) and production deviations.
  • Support Test Automation & Fixtures: Assist in designing, developing, and deploying automated test fixtures and equipment, utilizing basic software/scripting integration (such as Python or PLCs) to evaluate in-process and end-of-line performance.
  • Execute Quality Risk Documentation: Support the creation, maintenance, and execution of Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and establish clear testing protocols and acceptance criteria across production lines.
  • Analyze & Monitor Production Data: Maintain automated data collection processes to track yield, defect Pareto metrics, and operational trends, converting raw data into actionable reports for Quality and Operations leadership.
  • Optimize Line Efficiency: Evaluate testing procedures and cycle times to identify bottlenecks, driving process refinements that enhance first-pass yield without sacrificing safety or quality.
  • Maintain Quality & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure manufacturing methods, testing workflows, and documentation strictly align with ISO 9001 standards, customer specifications, and internal governance.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with Manufacturing Engineering and Hardware Design teams to define acceptance criteria, support New Product Introductions (NPI), and ensure seamless quality handoffs.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Educational & Technical Foundation: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, or Automation Engineering (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Relevant Industry Experience: 2-5 years of professional experience in a manufacturing environment, with hands-on exposure to automated test equipment and quality systems.
  • Root Cause & Statistical Proficiency: Practical experience with Statistical Process Control (SPC), Six Sigma methodologies, and standard problem-solving techniques.
  • Test & CAD Familiarity: Working knowledge of CAD software for fixture review/design (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and exposure to automation tools or scripting (e.g., PLC programming, Python).
  • Electro-Mechanical Diagnostics: Strong foundational understanding of electrical circuits, wiring harnesses, mechanical assemblies, and diagnostic tools.
  • Standards & Quality Systems: Solid working knowledge of ISO 9001 frameworks and formal Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Communication & Work Ethic: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to summarize technical data clearly for cross-functional partners.
  • Physical Work Requirements: Ability to work on-site on the active manufacturing floor, move throughout the facility (including bending, reaching, and kneeling), and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
