What is a static analysis?

A Static Analysis job involves analyzing software code without executing it to identify potential security vulnerabilities, coding errors, and performance issues. Professionals in this field use automated tools to scan source code, bytecode, or binaries to detect flaws early in the development cycle. They work closely with developers and security teams to ensure code quality, compliance with industry standards, and secure coding practices. This role is crucial in preventing security breaches and improving software reliability before deployment.

What does a typical day look like for someone in a static analysis position?

A typical day in a Static Analysis role involves using specialized tools to review source code for potential vulnerabilities, bugs, and deviations from security or coding standards. You’ll analyze scan results, prioritize findings, and work closely with developers to remediate issues, often participating in code reviews and team meetings. The role also includes documenting analyses, updating reports, and occasionally contributing to the development or refinement of coding guidelines. Successful static analysts balance independent investigative work with collaborative problem-solving in a dynamic, detail-oriented environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the static analysis position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Static Analysis role, you need a strong background in software engineering, programming languages (such as C, C++, Java, or Python), and an understanding of code security and quality principles, often supported by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with static analysis tools like SonarQube, Coverity, or Fortify, as well as experience with secure coding standards and possibly certifications like CSSLP, is highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in identifying vulnerabilities and explaining findings to development teams. These capabilities are vital for ensuring code reliability and security, reducing software defects, and supporting organizational compliance goals.

Job description

Do you love dissecting code to understand how it really works, and want to build tools that help millions of other developers trust theirs?

About JetBrains

We create intelligent software development tools for developers and teams. More than 15 million users, over 300,000 companies, and 88 of the Fortune Global Top 100 rely on our products to solve real, complex problems. Our mission is simple: make development teams more productive and AI adoptable at scale.

What you’ll do

We build Qodana to bring the intelligence of JetBrains IDEs directly into the CI/CD pipeline, helping engineering teams spot security flaws, license issues, and bugs before they ever reach production. As AI-assisted coding grows, the need for deep, static code analysis is more critical than ever.

In this role, you’ll join our Qodana Core team to expand our static analysis engine and design new algorithms for complex, inter-procedural code analysis. You will have direct ownership over how we configure and orchestrate these analyses across different environments. You’ll collaborate closely with other JetBrains compiler and IDE teams, directly influencing how development teams worldwide maintain code quality and adopt AI safely.

Day to day, you will:

  • Design and implement new static analysis checks, rules, and inter-procedural analysis algorithms.
  • Extend Qodana’s capabilities in critical areas like license compliance, security, and vulnerability detection.
  • Optimize how code analysis runs, configure execution paths, and orchestrate performance based on project context.
  • Build and refine CI/CD integrations to make Qodana easy to adopt across different development workflows.
  • Collaborate with compiler and IDE teams across JetBrains to share insights and align analysis engines.
  • Take ownership of features from early concept to release, gathering feedback and iterating to make them better.
What you’ll bring
  • A deep curiosity about code structure, compilers, and how static analysis works.
  • A proactive mindset, not waiting for permission to fix a broken process or improve a system.
  • Strong collaboration skills and a readiness to support your technical ideas with clear, logical reasoning.
  • Comfort working in a distributed team across different countries and time zones.
  • A focus on quality over quick fixes, valuing long‑term maintainability in your work.
What you’ll need
  • Deep, practical knowledge of JVM development (such as Kotlin or Java).
  • Experience designing and implementing complex algorithms or handling performance‑critical backend architectures.
  • Fluent communication skills in English to collaborate with team members globally.
What success looks like
  • First 3 months: You will get familiar with the Qodana codebase and the IntelliJ Platform architecture, delivering your first set of analysis rules and integrations.
  • First 6 months: You will take full ownership of specific analysis features, collaborating with neighboring teams to design robust solutions for complex codebases.
  • Long term: You will help shape the technical direction of Qodana Core, continuously raising the bar for static analysis performance and developer experience.
  • Strong base salary – We offer competitive pay that reflects your skills and experience.
  • Flexible work schedule – Enjoy the freedom to work from home or from the office.
  • Extra time off – More days to relax, recharge, and do the things you love.
  • Learning and development opportunities – Access to conferences, courses, and language classes.
  • Relocation support – Assistance to help make your move as smooth and stress‑free as possible.
  • Free meals and snacks – Lunch and refreshments provided to keep you fueled.
  • Health and wellness – On‑site gyms or sports club stipends.
  • Internal events – Company‑wide celebrations and team gatherings.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We know great ideas can come from anyone, anywhere. That’s why we do our best to create an open and inclusive workplace – one that welcomes everyone regardless of their background, identity, religion, age, accessibility needs, or orientation.
