We are seeking a State Tax Manager with deep expertise in state income tax and sales & use tax, plus hands-on experience with Avalara and CertCapture, to join our tax leadership team. In this role, you will lead state and local tax compliance, planning, and audit defense across multiple jurisdictions, leveraging Avalara’s tax automation tools to drive accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.

You’ll partner with internal teams and external advisors to ensure compliance, optimize our tax position, and reduce risk through strategic tax planning, process improvements, and technology enablement.


Responsibilities of the State Tax Manager position include, but are not limited to:

State Income Tax

  • Manage and review state income/franchise tax returns, extensions, and estimated payments
  • Oversee quarterly and annual state income tax provisions, including deferred tax analysis (ASC 740)
  • Perform apportionment calculations, review workpapers, and ensure accuracy of multi-state filings
  • Monitor legislative changes and assess the impact on the business

Sales & Use Tax (Avalara & CertCapture)

  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual sales & use tax compliance across all applicable states
  • Manage tax configuration, rates, and product/service taxability in Avalara
  • Monitor and maintain nexus determinations, including economic nexus thresholds
  • Maintain and validate exemption certificates using Avalara CertCapture, ensuring compliance with state requirements
  • Partner with IT, operations, and sales to ensure smooth Avalara integrations with ERP and other systems

Audit & Risk Management

  • Serve as the primary contact for state tax audits (income and sales & use)
  • Prepare responses, coordinate data collection, and manage resolution strategies
  • Proactively identify and mitigate potential areas of exposure

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Advisory

  • Partner with finance, legal, operations, and IT to ensure tax compliance and accuracy in business processes
  • Provide state tax guidance on transactions, contracts, and business expansions
  • Support M&A due diligence, integration, and post-transaction compliance

Process Improvement & Technology

  • Implement process efficiencies and best practices for compliance, reporting, and reconciliation
  • Utilize Avalara and other tax technology tools for automation, accuracy, and analytics
  • Maintain compliance dashboards and calendars to track deadlines and deliverables


Qualifications of the State Tax Manager position include, but are not limited to:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • 6+ years of progressive state tax experience, including both state income tax and sales & use tax
  • Hands-on experience with Avalara tax automation and CertCapture for exemption certificate management
  • Strong understanding of multi-jurisdictional tax compliance, nexus rules, and apportionment methodologies
  • Proven experience managing audits to resolution
  • Advanced Excel skills (PivotTables, VLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, conditional formatting, large data handling)
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills

Preferred:

  • CPA, JD, or MST
  • Public accounting experience (Big 4 or regional firm) plus corporate in-house experience
  • Experience with OneSource or Corptax
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and tax data extraction/reporting tools
