What is a state minimum wage?

A state minimum wage is the lowest hourly pay rate that employers are legally required to pay workers within a specific U.S. state. Each state can set its own minimum wage, which may be higher than the federal minimum wage but not lower. If a state's minimum wage is lower than the federal rate, the federal minimum typically applies. Some cities and counties may also have their own, higher minimum wages. Minimum wage laws are designed to protect workers and ensure a basic standard of living.
