Job description

Boise State University Boise State University invites applications for Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering. We seek a collaborative, accountable academic leader to guide the department during a period of growth in research activity, academic programs, and student demand. The Chair will work with faculty to develop and implement a forward-looking strategic vision while strengthening a cohesive academic community and expanding the department's impact in research, education, and external partnerships. The Department of Civil Engineering offers an ABET-accredited B.S. in Civil Engineering with emphasis areas in environmental, structural, geotechnical, transportation, and water resources engineering, along with a growing M.S. program. Faculty also advise students in Boise State's interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Engineering and Computing. The department currently serves approximately 270 undergraduate and 25 graduate students and includes 10 core faculty members. Leadership Opportunity Reporting to the Dean of the College of Engineering, the Chair provides academic and administrative leadership for the department.

Key priorities include:
  • Developing and implementing a long-term strategic vision for the department
  • Recruiting, mentoring, and supporting faculty through professional growth, evaluation, promotion, and tenure
  • Expanding research activity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and external funding
  • Promoting excellence in teaching and student-centered learning
  • Guiding curriculum development and maintaining ABET accreditation
  • Managing departmental resources and priorities with transparency and accountability
  • Building strong partnerships with alumni, industry, government, and community organizations
  • Supporting shared governance, transparent decision-making, and a collegial and collaborative departmental culture

The Chair is appointed to a three-year term, subject to annual faculty contract renewal in accordance with university policy. The appointment is renewable based on performance, departmental needs, and approval by the Dean and Provost.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
  • Eligible for appointment as an Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and able to meet Boise State's standards for tenure at the time of hire
  • Demonstrated academic leadership experience relevant to a department chair role
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to make complex decisions and manage conflict in academic or organizational settings

Preferred qualifications include experience with strategic planning, faculty development and evaluation, ABET accreditation, research growth, external partnerships, shared governance, organizational change, and interdisciplinary research and education. P.E. licensure, or the ability to obtain licensure, is also preferred.

Salary and Benefits
