Interns typically assist with coding, debugging, testing, and sometimes designing software solutions under the guidance of experienced developers. Working in a startup environment often means exposure to a wide range of tasks and technologies, providing valuable hands-on learning. This type of internship is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to build their technical skills and learn how startups operate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a startup software developer intern?

To thrive as a Startup Software Developer Intern, you need fundamental programming skills, familiarity with software development methodologies, and coursework or experience in computer science. These skills and qualities are vital for quickly contributing to projects, learning on the job, and directly impacting the startup’s growth.

Job description

Full-Stack / Backend Engineer - Construction Technology
The Opportunity
Our client is building the financial infrastructure layer for construction, a $12T global industry still powered by fragmented, legacy software.
Fresh off a $15M Series A led by Accel, with $20M+ in total funding, the company is profitable, cash-flow positive, and serving 550+ customers.
They're hiring a high-ownership Full-Stack / Backend Engineer who enjoys simplifying complex systems, building 0→1 products, and solving hard infrastructure problems.
What You'll Work On
  • Unify dozens of fragmented construction systems behind one clean API and data model
  • Build integrations with legacy and on-prem systems that may have limited APIs or documentation
  • Scale a platform handling millions of API requests per day
  • Improve performance, caching, reliability, testing, and observability
  • Build customer-facing products that run on top of the company's own APIs
  • Ship production code quickly and work directly with customers and founders

What We're Looking For
  • Roughly 1-10 years of software engineering experience
  • Strong backend or full-stack engineering ability
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure such as AWS
  • Strong systems thinking and comfort with ambiguity
  • High ownership, low ego, and a bias toward shipping
  • Exceptional new grads with strong internships, co-ops, or projects may be considered

Prior experience with construction tech, B2B SaaS, APIs, or the exact stack is not required.
Tech Stack
TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS, CDK, EC2
Location
  • Bay Area: In-office in San Francisco 5 days/week
  • Outside Bay Area: Remote available for exceptional candidates
  • Relocation and visa sponsorship available

Why Join?
You get the ownership and upside of an early-stage startup with much less early-stage risk:
  • 550+ customers
  • Profitable and cash-flow positive
  • $20M+ raised
  • Backed by Accel and Y Combinator
  • Massive, underserved market
  • Small, highly technical team
  • Direct access to experienced founders

This is a strong fit for an engineer who wants to solve durable technical problems, simplify messy systems, and help build a category-defining company.
