Starting Accountant information

What is a starting accountant?

A starting accountant is an entry-level professional who typically assists with basic accounting tasks such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, managing accounts payable and receivable, and supporting audits. They usually work under the supervision of more experienced accountants or managers while gaining practical experience and developing their skills. Starting accountants may work in various settings, including public accounting firms, private companies, or government agencies. They often have a degree in accounting or a related field and may be pursuing certification, such as becoming a CPA. This role is an important step for those beginning a career in accounting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a starting accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Starting Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks or SAP, as well as proficiency in Excel, is typically expected, and pursuing or holding a CPA certification can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, integrity, and effective communication skills help you excel in team settings and when interacting with clients. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and effective collaboration in the workplace.

What are some common challenges faced by starting accountants during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Starting accountants often encounter challenges such as managing a steep learning curve with new accounting software, understanding complex regulatory requirements, and balancing multiple tasks during busy periods like tax season or month-end close. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to actively seek guidance from more experienced colleagues, take advantage of any in-house training, and practice strong organizational skills. Building a solid foundation in communication and time management can also make adjusting to the demands of the role much smoother.

What is the difference between Starting Accountant vs Bookkeeper?

AspectStarting AccountantBookkeeper
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's degree in accounting or financeHigh school diploma or equivalent; certification optional
Work EnvironmentAccounting firms, corporate finance departments, or small businessesSmall businesses, freelance, or small accounting firms
Job ResponsibilitiesFinancial reporting, tax preparation, audit support, and analysisRecording financial transactions, maintaining ledgers, and invoicing

Starting Accountants typically hold a degree and handle more analytical and reporting tasks, while Bookkeepers focus on recording and maintaining financial records. Both roles are essential in finance, but Starting Accountants often have broader responsibilities and require formal education.

How can I get a job in starting accountant with no experience?

To start a career as an entry-level accountant with no experience, focus on gaining relevant skills through online courses in accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel, and consider earning certifications such as the Certified Bookkeeper or CPA. Internships, volunteering, or temporary positions can also provide practical experience and help build a professional network in the accounting field.

How much does a starting accountant get paid?

A starting accountant typically earns between $45,000 and $55,000 annually, depending on location, education, and certifications such as CPA. Entry-level roles often require proficiency with accounting software and basic financial knowledge.

Is 25 too late to become a starting accountant?

Starting an accounting career at 25 is not too late, as many accountants begin their careers in their mid-20s or later. Gaining relevant education, such as a degree in accounting or finance, and obtaining certifications like the CPA can help improve job prospects regardless of age.

Job description

Description

Who We Are

White Lodging develops and operates a portfolio of award-winning premium hotels, rooftop bars, and restaurants in some of the country's most dynamic cities. We know that the hospitality business, like life, is about how you make people feel. That's where you come in. You'll help bring the virtue of hospitality to life while we create an environment that allows you to be your best self and grow.

We are hiring an Accountant to join our corporate accounting team at our headquarters in Merrillville, Indiana. This is a hybrid accounting role — three days in our Merrillville corporate office and two days remote — offering the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule alongside the stability and growth potential of one of the country's leading hotel development and management companies. As a corporate Hotel Accountant at White Lodging, you'll manage the full general accounting function for an assigned group of hotel properties — owning financial statement preparation, general ledger management, balance sheet reconciliations, sales tax compliance, and ongoing hotel accounting support across multiple markets simultaneously.

If you're a Staff Accountant, Hotel Accountant, or recent accounting graduate looking for hybrid accounting jobs in Merrillville, Indiana or hybrid accounting jobs in the Chicago metro area, this is a rare opportunity to build a hospitality finance career at a high-growth company with a portfolio of more than 60 premium-brand hotels across the U.S. — without sacrificing the work-life balance a hybrid schedule provides.

What You'll Do

  • Manage the full general accounting function for an assigned group of hotel properties at a Tier 1 level — serving as the primary accounting point of contact for your hotel portfolio
  • Prepare periodic hotel income statements and financial reports with accuracy and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and White Lodging accounting standards
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts across all assigned hotel properties — identifying and resolving discrepancies with a detail-oriented, problem-solving approach
  • Review Daily Revenue reports from multiple hotel locations — monitoring performance trends and flagging variances for management review
  • Prepare Management Fee and Royalty Fee payments accurately and on schedule in accordance with hotel management agreements
  • Prepare monthly Sales and Occupancy Tax returns for all assigned hotel properties — ensuring full compliance with state and local tax regulations across multiple markets
  • Prepare hotel cash flow statements as part of the monthly financial reporting cycle
  • Perform other accounting duties as assigned to support the broader corporate accounting team and meet business needs

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting — required
  • 1+ years of accounting experience preferred — recent accounting graduates with strong academic foundations are encouraged to apply
  • Solid understanding of general ledger accounting, financial statement preparation, and balance sheet reconciliation
  • Working knowledge of sales and occupancy tax preparation — multi-state tax experience a plus
  • Proficiency in standard accounting software applications — experience with hotel accounting platforms or ERP systems a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a high attention to detail in a fast-paced, multi-property accounting environment
  • Ability to manage multiple hotel assignments and competing deadlines effectively in a team-oriented corporate accounting setting
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid work environment — self-directed and productive both in the Merrillville corporate office and remotely

What You Can Look Forward To

  • Hybrid work schedule — 3 days in our Merrillville, Indiana corporate office, 2 days remote
  • DailyPay — get paid when you need it
  • Unlimited employee referral bonuses
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off (PTO) with rollover
  • Complimentary wellness tools
  • Leadership development & tuition reimbursement
  • Discounts on hotel rooms, dining, and travel
  • Growth opportunities across a portfolio of 60+ premium hotel properties nationwide
  • Full-time associates also receive:
    • Medical, dental, and vision insurance — starting day 1
    • Life and disability insurance
    • Paid parental leave
    • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
