Job description

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is searching for its next great editor, someone ready to lead an exciting revolution in local news.
Are you obsessed with understanding the needs of readers, using data to help guide decisions? Do you relentlessly experiment with content and approaches that grow readership, refusing to be slowed by tradition or old habits? Are you passionate about great storytelling and developing top-level talent for a modern digital newsroom? Are you eager to use artificial intelligence to improve journalism and free journalists to do their most valuable work?
At McClatchy Media Co. our values are independence, transparency and trust. We move fast and adapt fearlessly, building tools, processes and workflows that empower every journalist to grow their readership and impact.
Fort Worth is the 10th largest city in the nation, blending Old West roots with vibrant nightlife and a thriving cultural scene. It is home to Texas Christian University, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and American Airlines and is less than 40 minutes from DFW Airport, Texas Motor Speedway and the stadiums for the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and Stars.
What you will bring
  • At least five years of experience as a successful leader of a newsroom or large team
  • A combination of knowledge and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree, including education, experience, skills, and knowledge necessary to perform the job.
  • The proven ability to lead, inspire, and convey knowledge to others and to work effectively with a wide range of colleagues in managing change
  • Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced, constantly evolving, and more outcome-oriented than task-oriented
  • A track record of innovation, flexibility, and comfort managing change
  • Experience working collaboratively across a large organization
  • A focus on ensuring that content and staffing represent the fullness of the community and state and the diversity of the people who live there
  • Experience working with analytics to grow audience and increase subscriptions
  • Experience as a multi-platform storyteller, with passion for the written word as well as visual and audio journalism
  • Experience managing performance, including setting clear expectations, providing appropriate training, and holding staff members accountable
  • Ability to solve problems, innovate, and adapt in service of the primary goal, which is to produce quality journalism that reaches and engages readers and subscribers and has an impact
  • Ability to prioritize, meet short and long deadlines, and consistently fact-check.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: active listening, collaborative problem-solving, and relationship-building with diverse communities.
  • Computer proficiency (e.g., Google Workspace, web research, databases).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work remotely while contributing to a team environment.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
