What are Star Nuts in the context of bicycles?

A star nut is a small, star-shaped metal component used in the steering system of bicycles with threadless headsets. It is inserted inside the steerer tube of the bike's fork and serves to anchor the top cap bolt, which helps preload the headset bearings and keep the steering smooth and secure. Installing a star nut requires a specific tool to drive it into the tube at the correct depth, and it is not typically reusable once installed. Star nuts are most commonly found in bikes with aluminum or steel forks, as they are not suitable for carbon steerer tubes.
