OVERVIEW

Arts Bonita is looking for a PART-TIME Glass Art Instructor to lead our glass art classes and workshops, designed to serve the large community of adult artists in our area. This specialized course will empower students to master the artistry of cutting, blowing, shaping, and creating art in glass through various techniques including fused glass, stained glass, and hot glass work. The instructor will safely guide students through proper use of glass tools and equipment while managing a dynamic studio environment. This role can grow over time as the program expands. Classes are between 1 and 3 hours in length and serve adult students. This is a year-round position as we offer programs in all seasons, including Summer, Winter and Spring sessions, along with our traditional Fall and Spring offerings.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of comprehensive glass art curricula for adult learners of varying skill levels
  • Teach fundamental and advanced glass techniques including cutting, scoring, breaking, grinding, and finishing
  • Instruct students in multiple glass art disciplines including fused glass, stained glass, glass blowing, slumping, and casting techniques
  • Teach proper use and maintenance of glass tools including glass cutters, grinders, kilns, torches, and blowing equipment
  • Demonstrate glass selection, types of glass (sheet glass, frit, rods, tubes), compatibility, and color theory in glass
  • Guide design development from concept to completion, including pattern making, templates, and project planning
  • Teach kiln operation, firing schedules, and temperature control for various glass techniques
  • Enforce comprehensive safety protocols including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilation, heat safety, and safe handling of glass and tools
  • Manage a studio environment with 12 to 18 students, ensuring safe workspace organization, traffic flow, and proper equipment usage
  • Supervise hot glass work areas and ensure safe practices around furnaces, glory holes, and torches
  • Provide constructive feedback on students' technique, design choices, and artistic development
  • Create a supportive, collaborative learning environment that encourages artistic exploration and experimentation
  • Assess and evaluate student progress and skill development
  • Stay current with contemporary glass art practices, techniques, and trends
  • Maintain studio equipment, kilns, tools, and facilities in safe working condition
  • Monitor kiln operations and maintain proper firing schedules
  • Manage materials inventory and coordinate glass and supply orders
  • Collaborate with administration on budget, scheduling, and facility needs
  • Coordinate with marketing to promote courses and workshops
  • Build relationships with the greater glass art and artist community
  • Lead the program into the future and help grow its recognition and impact

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Glass Art, Craft, or related field (preferred)
  • Professional experience as a glass artist with a demonstrable portfolio of completed works
  • Proven mastery of glass art techniques across multiple disciplines (fused glass, stained glass, glass blowing, etc.)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of glass art safety protocols, including heat safety, ventilation requirements, and proper PPE usage
  • Experience with glass cutting, grinding, kiln operation, and firing schedules
  • Knowledge of hot glass techniques including blowing, shaping, and torch work (preferred)
  • Understanding of glass chemistry, compatibility, and COE (coefficient of expansion)
  • Prior teaching or workshop facilitation experience with adults (preferred)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience and ability to work well with adult learners of varying skill levels and physical abilities
  • Enthusiasm for helping artists develop their glass art skills and creative vision
  • Knowledge of glass art history, contemporary glass movement, and market opportunities for glass artists
  • Understanding of exhibition opportunities and professional development for glass artists
  • Studio management and organizational skills, including ability to maintain a safe and efficient workspace for 12 to 18 students
  • Physical ability to demonstrate glass techniques and assist students with equipment
  • Ability to work in hot studio environments and handle equipment at high temperatures
  • Adaptability and problem-solving abilities in teaching diverse students and managing studio challenges
  • Passion for supporting and uplifting the artistic community
