What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Stack Testing Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stack Testing Technician, you need a solid understanding of environmental science, air sampling methods, and relevant EPA regulations, typically supported by a science degree or equivalent technical training. Familiarity with stack testing equipment, data logging systems, and certifications such as Source Evaluation Society (SES) accreditation are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this field. These skills ensure accurate emission measurements, regulatory compliance, and reliable reporting for environmental protection.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in stack testing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in stack testing often encounter challenges related to variable weather conditions, strict regulatory requirements, and the need for precise data collection. Working at elevated heights and handling sensitive equipment also require adherence to stringent safety protocols. To address these challenges, teams typically undergo thorough safety training, use specialized monitoring instruments, and maintain clear communication with other environmental and engineering staff to ensure accurate results and regulatory compliance.

What is stack testing?

Stack testing refers to the process of measuring the emissions released from industrial stacks or chimneys to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. It involves collecting and analyzing samples of gases and particulates emitted during industrial processes. The results help determine if a facility is meeting air quality standards and can identify areas for improvement. Stack testing is typically required by regulatory agencies to monitor pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.

Position Summary
The T1 Air Professional role is essential for establishing the facility's exhaust monitoring framework well ahead of 2027 deadlines. This role will manage the entire stack testing lifecycle-from vendor selection to the troubleshooting of initial sampling events-ensuring that infrastructure teams are aligned and that actual emissions remain consistently below MAERT limits for GHGs and criteria pollutants. Beyond high-level planning, this position serves as the primary owner for the site's Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program and Method 21 compliance. In addition, this role will manage onsite analytical instrumentation, including portable FTIRs, to investigate emissions anomalies and oversee critical data acquisition for daily compliance monitoring. Whether conducting EPA Method 9 opacity monitoring or participating in regulatory inspections with the TCEQ, this role will assist in ensuring T1 remains in continuous compliance with federal and state environmental standards.
Role and Responsibilities
Here's What You'll Be Responsible For:
  • Opacity monitoring for all emission points following EPA Method 9. Required stack testing as outlined in the T1 PSD Air Permit.
  • Leak Detection & Repair (LDAR) program ownership
  • EPA Method 21 testing
  • EPA/TCEQ Regulatory inspections and reports
  • Exhaust monitoring and investigations

Skills and Qualifications
Here's what you'll need:
  • B.S. Degree in engineering, environmental science or other closely related discipline is preferred.
  • 2 years of Air emissions stack testing experience (per Core EPA Promulgated Test Methods (40 CFR Part 60), TCEQ guidance a plus).
  • 2 years of Experience with onsite analytical instruments in support of air testing projects. This including FTIR, GC/FID, GC/FPD, IC, gravimetric and multiple titrations.
  • 2 years of experience with Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), Data Acquisition & Handling Systems (DAHS), as well as environmental databases.
  • Familiarity with site air permit GHG (Green House Gas) testing methods for Fluorinated gases.

The current base salary range for this role is between $57,760 - $127,770.
