As an SST, your day typically involves working one-on-one or in small groups with students who need additional academic, emotional, or behavioral support. You’ll assess student progress, collaborate with classroom teachers to adapt lessons, and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) where applicable. Regularly communicating with parents and participating in team meetings are also important aspects of the job. To excel as an SST (Student Support Teacher), you need a strong background in education, child development, and special education best practices, typically supported by a teaching degree and appropriate licensure. Familiarity with IEP (Individualized Education Program) management systems, assessment tools, and student data tracking software is often required. Strong soft skills such as empathy, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial for working with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams. These abilities ensure each student's learning needs are identified and supported, leading to improved educational outcomes.
