Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Solid Rocket Motor Engineering Team. The successful candidate for this role has a strong understanding of thermal analysis principles, with expertise in some of the tools common in industry. As a Thermal Engineer you will conduct detailed thermal analysis of solid rocket motor components. You will collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary teams, interface with customers, and drive technical excellence. This is a full-time position with a 9/80 schedule. This position can be remote or at our Huntsville, AL or Hampton, AR facility.

Essential Functions
  • Applies engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Confers with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Specifies system components or directs modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Investigates equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.
Required Qualifications
  • Required education and experience: Associate's Degree and 5-7 years' experience
  • Discipline/Major: Engineering degree required
  • Critical professional related technical skills; computer skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred education and experience: Bachelor's Degree

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed thermal analysis of solid rocket motor components.
  • Size internal insulation, external thermal protection systems, and structural insulators.
  • Validate models with test data; develop predictive ablation and erosion models.
  • Define sub‑scale tests for characterizing material properties of insulators and ablators.
  • Evaluate and recommend ablative materials and thermal protection system solutions for applications in solid rocket motors
  • Create reports and presentations documenting analysis and other supporting work.
  • Present to peers and customers in design reviews.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time.
  • Requires regular movement throughout GD-OTS facilities.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time.
  • Work primarily in a climate‑controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
  • Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.
Travel Requirements

Up to 25% travel likely.

Pay Range (USD)

$100,300-$135,700

The salary range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum for salary for this position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, internal equity, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the range during the hiring process.

Additional Compensation

Hired applicant may be eligible to participate in the Company’s Gain Sharing Program.
