How much do sre intern jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for sre intern in the United States is $17.04, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges SRE Interns face when learning to manage large-scale systems?

SRE Interns often encounter the challenge of quickly adapting to complex, large-scale infrastructure and understanding the interplay between reliability, scalability, and performance. Learning to troubleshoot incidents, interpret monitoring dashboards, and participate in on-call rotations can be overwhelming at first. However, most teams provide mentorship, documentation, and structured onboarding to help interns ramp up successfully. Collaboration with experienced engineers is key, and asking questions is encouraged to build confidence and expertise.

What is the difference between Sre Intern vs DevOps Intern?

AspectSre InternDevOps Intern
Required CredentialsBasic knowledge of Linux, scripting, cloud platformsSimilar skills, often with some scripting and cloud familiarity
Work EnvironmentFocus on system reliability, monitoring, and automationFocus on deployment, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, cloud providers, large enterprisesTech startups, software companies, cloud services

Both Sre Intern and DevOps Intern roles involve working with cloud platforms, scripting, and automation. However, Sre Interns typically focus more on system reliability, monitoring, and incident response, while DevOps Interns concentrate on deployment pipelines, infrastructure automation, and continuous integration. The roles often overlap but serve different core functions within IT and software development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SRE Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SRE Intern, you need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, basic scripting or programming skills (such as Python or Bash), and familiarity with Linux systems. Exposure to monitoring tools (like Prometheus or Grafana), cloud platforms, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make an intern stand out. These skills are crucial for maintaining system reliability, quickly addressing incidents, and collaborating with engineering teams to ensure high system availability.

What does an SRE Intern do?

An SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) Intern assists with maintaining and improving the reliability, scalability, and performance of software systems. They typically work on automating operational tasks, monitoring system health, responding to incidents, and helping implement best practices for deployment and infrastructure. SRE Interns collaborate with engineering teams to ensure services are robust and can recover quickly from failures, often writing scripts and using tools to optimize processes. This role is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cloud platforms, automation, and large-scale system operations.

What You Will Do
We are seeking a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to support the SBA Disaster Lending Platform modernization effort in a remote capacity. This role will help establish and mature SRE practices across AWS cloud environments, with a focus on reliability, automation, scalability, observability, incident response, and operational excellence.
In this role, you will work closely with engineering, DevOps, cloud, security, and product teams to improve system resilience, reduce downtime, strengthen deployment practices, and support reliable cloud-based application delivery in an Agile environment.
Responsibilities include:
โ€ข Help establish and mature SRE practices within an Agile Scrum delivery environment.
โ€ข Support system design reviews to identify reliability risks, failure points, scalability concerns, and opportunities for automation.
โ€ข Improve operational readiness by contributing to code reviews, deployment reviews, monitoring practices, and reliability-focused engineering standards.
โ€ข Support incident management activities, including troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, mitigation planning, and post-incident improvements.
โ€ข Build and maintain automation to improve reliability, reduce manual effort, and support self-healing cloud infrastructure.
โ€ข Support AWS cloud platform operations across monitoring, logging, security, scalability, and availability.
โ€ข Work with CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code tools to support repeatable, secure, and reliable deployments.
โ€ข Create and maintain clear technical documentation for systems, processes, runbooks, and operational procedures.
โ€ข Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to promote DevOps, automation, and reliability best practices.
What You Will Need
โ€ข Minimum of four years of experience supporting the reliability, scalability, security, and operational excellence of AWS cloud platforms.
โ€ข Bachelor's degree required, or four additional years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
โ€ข Hands-on experience with CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Ansible Automation Platform, GitLab, Artifactory, and Packer.
โ€ข Strong scripting and automation experience using Python, PowerShell, and Bash; Python experience is preferred.
โ€ข Experience supporting Windows and Linux environments.
โ€ข Strong understanding of networking concepts, cloud troubleshooting, monitoring, logging, and incident response.
โ€ข Experience designing, deploying, or supporting cloud-based systems with a focus on reliability, scalability, security, and performance.
โ€ข Knowledge of source control best practices.
โ€ข Experience working in Agile delivery environments, including Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, or similar methodologies.
โ€ข Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to resolve complex technical issues in high-pressure situations.
โ€ข Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams, stakeholders, and cross-functional partners.
โ€ข Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship and able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
Nice to Have
โ€ข Current or prior government contracting experience.
โ€ข Red Hat, CompTIA, AWS, or related technical certifications.
โ€ข Experience mentoring technical teams or helping promote DevOps/SRE practices across engineering groups.
