What are Sr SQL Developers?

Sr SQL Developers are experienced professionals who specialize in designing, developing, and maintaining complex databases using Structured Query Language (SQL). They are responsible for writing advanced queries, optimizing database performance, and ensuring data integrity and security. Typically, Sr SQL Developers also collaborate with other developers and analysts to support business applications, troubleshoot issues, and implement data solutions. Their expertise often includes working with large datasets, data warehousing, and integrating databases with various software systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr SQL Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sr SQL Developer, you need advanced expertise in SQL programming, database design, data modeling, and performance tuning, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with database management systems like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help in translating business requirements into efficient database solutions. These skills are crucial for optimizing data workflows, ensuring data integrity, and supporting organizational decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by Sr SQL Developers when optimizing complex queries in large databases?

Sr SQL Developers often encounter challenges such as identifying inefficient queries, dealing with poorly indexed tables, and managing high volumes of transactional data. Optimizing complex queries may require deep analysis of execution plans, refactoring legacy code, and collaborating closely with database administrators to balance performance with data integrity. Staying updated with the latest SQL features and performance tuning techniques is key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring databases run efficiently.

Job description

We are looking for a Senior SQL Developer to join a long-term contract opportunity supporting enterprise automotive systems in Southern California. This onsite role requires deep expertise in SQL development, database engineering, and production support, with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and compliance in a regulated environment. The ideal candidate will take ownership of full lifecycle database solutions while partnering with technical teams to deliver stable, scalable, and well-documented systems.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee the design, build, deployment, and ongoing support of database solutions for large enterprise applications.

• Investigate production incidents, identify underlying causes, and implement lasting corrections that improve application stability.

• Diagnose and resolve issues affecting SQL Server online and batch processing while maintaining adherence to operational and compliance standards.

• Review and refine recurring batch workloads to improve throughput, reduce delays, and shorten critical processing windows.

• Create scalable and dependable database structures, queries, and related components that support high-performance applications.

• Conduct cross-system impact assessments to evaluate dependencies and reduce risk before implementing changes.

• Establish and maintain controls that protect data accuracy, reconciliation, and integrity across critical processes.

• Produce complete technical documentation covering estimates, design decisions, development work, testing, and audit readiness.

• Enhance operational reliability by automating monitoring, alerting, and routine support processes.

• Participate in after-hours and weekend on-call support as needed to address incidents within defined service expectations.

• Strong experience developing and supporting SQL-based database solutions in enterprise environments.
• Advanced knowledge of SQL Server development, query tuning, indexing strategy, and execution plan analysis.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot production issues and deliver permanent resolutions in complex application landscapes.
• Experience creating technical documentation that meets audit, change management, and compliance expectations.
• Familiarity with data integrity controls, reconciliations, and dependable batch processing operations.
• Ability to design scalable database models and optimize performance for both transactional and reporting workloads.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical teams and support less experienced colleagues.
• Exposure to automation, monitoring practices, and cloud technologies is preferred.
