About the Team
The Developer Agent team is on a mission to provide tools that make the Workday platform open, extensible, and AI-native. We meet developers where they are - giving them the freedom to build in the agentic tool of their choice, prompting through plain language, building applications, agents, and orchestrating complex workflows across the entire Workday stack.
Backed by intelligent, context-aware AI agents that deeply understand the platform, we supercharge how developers code, navigate, automate, troubleshoot, and ship .The result is a development experience that's not just seamless, but genuinely smart. We're not just improving how developers work but handing them the keys to build the next generation of agentic AI applications on the Open Workday ecosystem.
As part of this team, you' will work at the intersection of developer productivity, AI, and platform engineering, reimagining the entire developer platform from the ground up and shaping how thousands of developers build on Workday's open platform.
About the Role
As a Senior Full Stack Engineer on the Developer Agent team, you will design and build core platform capabilities that advance Workday toward more AI powered agentic developer experiences and workflows . You will deliver high-impact technical work, contribute to architecture and API/SDK design, and collaborate across product and engineering teams to ship reliable, scalable services and tools consumed by external developers.
In this role, you will:
  • Act as a Directly Responsible Individual (DRI), driving ambiguous, complex problems from initial concept to production. You are comfortable defining success metrics, aligning stakeholders, and leading small, high-impact teams to deliver scalable solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with principal engineers, product managers, and cross-functional teams to translate high level requirements into well-scoped, executable engineering work.
  • Uphold API governance and engineering best practices within your team, including versioning, backward compatibility, and security standards for public-facing surfaces.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code review, design feedback, and pairing, and help raise the technical bar on the team.
  • Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to build-vs-integrate decisions for platform components, with grounding in real-world tradeoffs of scale and maintainability.
  • Write clear technical documentation for your features and contribute to internal engineering knowledge bases.

  • 8+ years of experience in JVM-based backend development (Java or Kotlin), with proficiency in the Spring Boot framework.
  • 8+ years of proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, including experience with React.
  • 5+ years developing RESTful APIs and manage complex third-party API integrations.
  • 5+ years with hands-on experience deploying and operating production services in a cloud-native environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
Other Qualifications
  • AI & Agentic Systems: Familiarity with large language model integration strategies, such as OpenAI-compatible APIs, data streaming, and tool/function calling. You understand agentic architectures and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a producer or consumer.
  • Agentic Coding Tools: Hands on experience with AI coding agents such as Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf, or Cline.
  • Backend API Development: You are comfortable implementing real-time streaming (SSE/WebSockets) and OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
  • Frontend & React: Proficiency in modern frontend technologies including React, HTML, and CSS to deliver high-quality developer-facing interfaces.
  • Code Quality & Testing: A strong commitment to testing methodologies using frameworks like Jest, React Testing Library, JUnit, Cypress, & similar. You are capable of authoring stable, reliable tests for asynchronous logic and multi-turn AI interaction patterns.
  • Observability & Operations: Background in application observability, including error tracking , metrics instrumentation, and product analytics. Familiarity with managing CI/CD workflows via GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or other cloud deployment pipelines, and extension publishing environments like the VS Code Marketplace.
