Sr Rf Design Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by Sr RF Design Engineers when working on complex wireless projects?

Sr RF Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing performance, cost, and regulatory requirements during the design of advanced wireless systems. They must troubleshoot issues such as signal interference, component non-linearity, and thermal management, all while meeting project deadlines. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as hardware engineers, PCB designers, and test engineers—is essential to resolve technical problems and optimize system integration. Staying up to date with evolving wireless standards and emerging technologies is also crucial for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr RF Design Engineer?

To thrive as a Sr RF Design Engineer, you need deep expertise in RF/microwave theory, circuit design, and a relevant degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools like ADS, HFSS, and network analyzers, as well as familiarity with wireless communication standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills make someone stand out in this role. These skills are essential for designing robust RF systems, ensuring optimal performance, and successfully collaborating on complex engineering projects.

What does a Sr RF Design Engineer do?

A Sr RF (Radio Frequency) Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing RF circuits and systems used in wireless communication devices, such as cell phones, radios, and satellite equipment. They work on tasks like creating circuit layouts, performing simulations, testing prototypes, and troubleshooting issues to ensure optimal performance and regulatory compliance. Sr RF Design Engineers often collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate RF solutions into larger products and oversee the transition from design to production. Their expertise helps ensure reliable and efficient wireless communication.

Bachelor’s degree – Required
Active Secret Clearance - Required

Responsibilities

  • Follow USMC supplied operational scenarios, architecture framework (DoDAF), and RF performance requirements for developing a new system’s RF design.

  • Review the development of new system requirements (decomposed from the USMC operational requirements) in regard to RF performance.

  • Assist with RF component requirement specifications, as needed.

  • Research and recommend appropriate COTS or vendor-developed RF components (transceivers, antennas, amplifiers, analog filters, switches, couplers, splitters, cables, etc.) for a new system based on RF performance requirements, size, weight, and power (SWAP) constraints, aircraft space limitations, existing aircraft antenna locations, and anticipated operational use.

  • Review vendor simulations of candidate antenna performance based on aircraft location and operational use. Support senior RF engineers with the down select of the best candidate antennas for the system under development.

  • Assist senior RF engineers with building an RF spread bench to test a new system’s candidate RF components. Evaluate candidate COTS and vendor-developed RF system components using the RF spread bench and summarize test results.

  • Support the chamber testing of a new system and/or its prototype.

  • Assist with the generation and documentation of new systems’ RF block diagrams.

  • Assist senior RF engineers with the development and evaluation of a new system’s RF switching hardware (RF Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs)).

  • Support the down select of system RF components.

  • Assist with the generation and maintenance of RF component Acceptance Test Procedures (ATPs). Conduct ATPs on RF components.

  • Assist with troubleshooting RF system issues.

  • Assist senior RF engineers with ensuring system compliance with MIL-STD-461 (EMI) and MIL-STD-464 (EMC).

  • Assist with system RF chamber testing.

  • Collate required system RF data to enable an outside Navy competency to perform HERO, HERF, and HERP analyses.

  • Investigate RF system safety concerns/issues.

  • Assist a co-located Navy competency with RF threat technique evaluation, as needed.
