Job Title: Senior Systems Engineer

Location: Halifax, Gatineau, Ottawa, or Montreal (LaSalle)

About the role

Join a high-impact team supporting the development of advanced Information Systems for the Royal Canadian Navy. As a member of the Systems Engineering Team within the ICS Section, you will contribute to the design, development, integration, and delivery of key naval information systems that support mission-critical capabilities. Working within a collaborative engineering environment, you will help shape innovative technical solutions and advance the digital backbone of Canada's future naval fleet.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Client and Industry Interactions: Interact with clients, contracted industry partners,operational/technicalstakeholders and the Royal Canadian Navy to understand, derive and decompose, and document system requirements for RCD Information Systems. Includes organizing, preparing and leading workshops with government and industry stakeholders to define technical, interface and user requirements. Conduct requirements reconciliation and tracing analysis

  • Systems Engineering: Develop high level architectures, define interfaces to other systems, plan for the physical integration of the systems in the ship (space, weight, power, cooling, racks, cabling), track and assess the impact of new information from stakeholders on the design/test work in progress, and coordinate with information systems subject matter experts who will perform IT detailed design and integration testing

  • Documentation: Produce engineering artefacts including Technical Data Packages (TDPs), Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Interface Specification (IFS) documents, diagrams, plans, schedules, use cases and reports regarding the information systems being developed

  • Team Collaboration:Participate and contribute in internal and external project technical review, coordination and progress scrums, workshops, sprints and meetings, and support quality objectives through peer reviews

  • Safety First:Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world class safety culture

Mandatory requirement:

Canadian Citizenship, with 10 or more years residing in Canada with no periods longer than six continuous months out of country, is absolutely necessary as part of the requirements to obtain a government security clearance to the minimum level of Secret.

Must-Haves

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in technical/engineering work, including a minimum of at least 4 years specifically in systems engineering

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in integration, and lifecycle management of complex, multi-domain systems, ensuring technical coherence, interoperability, performance, security, and compliance across electrical, networking, software, and infrastructure components

  • Systems engineering, systems security engineering, System Development Life Cycle processes in the context of information systems and information technology and requirements management and traceability.

  • Structured cabling systems for data communications, including various copper and fibre optic cable types, and the ability to develop cable schedules and drawings;

Strong knowledge and experience in applying:

  • INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook

  • ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288

  • ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148 (Requirements Engineering)

  • PMBOK Guide

  • Naval/NATO standards

Nice to have:

  • Experience supporting the design, integration, testing, or sustainment of Information Technology capabilities deployed aboard Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) vessels

  • Application of DND/CAF policies and directives in relation to communications security, emissions security and physical security

  • Familiarity with Military or Naval Systems

  • Familiarity with project management, industry best practices and processes, collaboration and productivity tools (adept at Microsoft Project, Visio, SharePoint, Teams, and IBM DOORS)

  • Knowledge of enterprise networking, system integration, and cybersecurity principles within complex operational environments

  • Ability to work to tight timelines and take on additional roles or responsibilities when needed

  • Demonstrated experience working well with customers of varying levels of technical expertise in complex environments

  • High level of motivation with the ability to work in a team or autonomously, on site or from home

  • Excellent English writing skills, including technical artefacts, reports, presentations, and correspondence

  • Fast learner, proactive, responsive, self-driven and autonomous, excellent organizational skills, takes ownership, demonstrates pride in their work, and pays very high attention to detail
