Senior Infrastructure Engineer (hybrid-remote)

Columbus, Ohio, United States

About the Job

This is a hybrid-remote role for applicants local to Columbus, Ohio. The Sr. Infrastructure Engineer maintains and upgrades the companyโ€™s core infrastructure technologies and systems to ensure that systems do not fail. They will ensure the proper operation of core infrastructure via highly trained and skilled system administration, preventative maintenance and timely repairs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Proactively monitors the environment, creates and reviews performance reports and makes recommendations.
  • Identify, repair, and resolve enterprise network infrastructure issues and potential issues tracking details in ServiceDesk plus incident management tool. Providing timely resolution and effective solutions of support issues while following company standards.
  • Collaborates with IT teams and key business partners to troubleshoot complex systems and provides solutions, as appropriate.
  • Makes recommendations for strategic changes in the hardware and software configurations to improve technical, data integrity and security, and/or to deliver improved applications utility to the end users.
  • Performs advanced and/or complex experimental troubleshooting skills.
  • He / she evaluates requirements to provide appropriate technical specifications and solutions. Creates, tests and maintains solutions for technology needs of the enterprise.
  • Builds strong relationships with the Service Desk, the Infrastructure team, and other IT teams. The candidate must possess strong communication skills and a motivation to partner with internal teams to achieve results.
  • Provides consultation and technical advice on IT infrastructure planning, engineering, and architecture for systems by assessing the implications of IT strategies on infrastructure capabilities.
  • Provides recommendations and input on options, risks, costs, and benefits for systems designs.
  • Evaluates existing systems to make recommendations on resources required to maintain service levels.
  • Evaluates new service options, identifies issues and impacts, and provides recommendations on feasibility and ROI.
  • Collaborates with architects and software engineers to ensure functional specifications are converted into flexible, scalable, and maintainable design.
  • Ability to work on assignments that are complex in nature and where considerable judgment and initiative are required in implementation and problem resolution.
  • Optimize existing solutions and provide improvement feedback to IT teams. Design and develop new tools and smart alerts that help discover failures/issues in a timely fashion. Perform system reviews, evaluate implementations, and provide feedback about potential improvements.
  • Provide technical mentoring and knowledge sharing to team members.
  • Define and evangelize system optimizations and best practices to improve reliability and performance. Develop automation, processes, and tools designed to make responding to and resolving incidents simpler and more robust.
  • Ability to see and present 'the big picture' and offer solutions to make it better to both fellow engineers and business facing customers.
  • Ensure the proper operation of the core infrastructure via highly trained and skilled system administration, preventative maintenance and timely repairs.
  • Ability to formalized documentation (policies, procedures, diagrams, engineering specifications) to ensure business continuity and smooth operations as well as preparing professional engagement documentation (statements of work, project plan cost benefit analysis, recommendations)
  • Troubleshoots network(s), infrastructure, or application issues, identifies root cause, establishes return to service, evaluates/develops/implements/documents mitigation strategies.
  • Identifies and proactively seeks opportunities to implement process improvements, documents technical diagrams and procedures.
Position Requirements
  • Four-year college degree in Information Systems/Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5 years minimum experience with progressive IT experience in areas of networking. Experience in service desk or end-user support a plus.
  • 2+ years of experience interfacing with customers and providing technical solutions.
  • Proven knowledge and experience of infrastructure design and implementation
  • Ability to implement solutions to complex routing requirements
  • Senior level knowledge & experience with enterprise firewalls, switches, wireless controllers, and other networking devices
  • Ability to create, document and explain operation trade-offs of various designs
  • Ability to build a complex network map and translate to executive summary
  • Experience working in a multifacility environment
  • Experience working with multiple vendors/clients simultaneously to coordinate projects
  • Familiarity with MS Visio (or equivalent)
  • Proven experience configuring and managing any of the following products and platforms:
    • Juniper switches and Junos
    • CISCO IOS and Catalyst series switches
    • PAN OS, Global Protect
    • Aruba Products such as ClearPass & AirWave
  • Curiosity, self-motivation and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently but also with other teams when required
  • Willingness to mentor less experienced staff
  • Ability to contribute meaningful ideas, advice and best practices when problem solving
  • Critical thinking, problem solving skills and ability to make sound judgment based on facts available
  • Task/goal oriented- ability to parse through extraneous information
  • Customer service oriented

Must be local to Columbus and be ready to work in a hybrid mode (onsite 2 days a week as needed). Travel will be required occasionally within 3 Columbus locations.
