What is a Sr Firmware Engineer?

Sr Firmware Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that enables hardware devices to function correctly. They work closely with hardware engineers to create code that interacts directly with electronic components, such as microcontrollers and sensors. Their responsibilities often include debugging, optimizing firmware for performance and reliability, and ensuring compatibility with other system components. Sr Firmware Engineers typically have strong programming skills in languages like C or C++, and deep knowledge of embedded systems and electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Firmware Engineer?

To thrive as a Sr Firmware Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and hardware-software integration, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), debugging tools (like JTAG), version control systems, and relevant certifications such as ARM or Embedded Systems are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and drive projects forward. These skills ensure reliable firmware development, smooth cross-functional teamwork, and the delivery of robust products in complex technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Sr Firmware Engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Sr Firmware Engineers often collaborate with hardware, software, and product teams to ensure seamless integration of embedded systems. A common challenge is balancing differing timelines and priorities among teams, which requires strong communication and project management skills. Additionally, troubleshooting issues that span both hardware and software domains can be complex, necessitating a deep understanding of both areas. Successfully navigating these challenges allows Sr Firmware Engineers to deliver robust solutions and drive project success.

At Allegion, we help keep the people you know and love safe and secure where they live, work and visit. With more than 40 brands, 14,000+ employees globally and products sold in 130 countries, we specialize in security around the doorway and beyond.

Senior Firmware Engineer
Allegion is seeking a skilled and passionate Senior Firmware Engineer to join a highly engaged team within a global organization of 14,000+ employees, representing 30+ brands (including Schlage, Von Duprin, and LCN) focused on safety, security, and access management. You'll play a crucial role creating solutions that enable seamless access - keeping people safe and secure where they work, live, and thrive. This is a hybrid role based in Indianapolis, Indiana. This role places significant emphasis on test strategy, automation, and quality ownership to ensure reliable, high-confidence firmware releases.
Hybrid:
At Allegion, we are driven by a bold vision: redefining safety while empowering our employees to thrive. When you join our team, you become part of a culture that values innovation, purpose, and excellence. This role offers the benefits of our dynamic hybrid work model-combining in-person collaboration for meaningful moments with the flexibility of remote work. Since hybrid arrangements can vary based on the needs of the individual, team and business, your talent acquisition partner will provide specific hybrid details about this role.
We are committed to fostering a healthy work-life balance and building meaningful connections, ensuring you have the tools, resources, and support needed to excel in any environment. Together, we'll unlock your potential and create a lasting impact.
While this is the current structure and we currently have no plans to change, we reserve the right to make changes to the hybrid schedule as needed at the Company's discretion.
Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. The company does not intend to provide sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B, TN, etc.) for this employment position.
What you will do:
  • Design, develop, and debug firmware for platform assets used in multiple access control scenarios.
  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks for firmware testing covering static analysis, unit, integration, and regression testing.
  • Measure and increase test coverage over time, making sure to emulate edge cases and failure scenarios.
  • With assistance from other teams, design and maintain automated hardware-in-the-loop test hardware to support regression testing. This will include everything from verifying wireless network functionality to testing sensor behavior.
  • Identify, document, troubleshoot, and resolve firmware issues.
  • Monitor and analyze test results, creating detailed test reports and quality metrics to ensure continuous improvement in firmware quality.
  • Improve quality, robustness, and rigor of firmware platform code.
  • Perform design & code analysis utilizing appropriate tools

What we are looking for:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5 plus years of firmware engineering experience
  • Experience working with ARM Cortex-M series.
  • Experience working with Real Time Operating Systems
  • Proficiency in Python and C with strong analytical skills to debug, troubleshoot, and isolate complex issues across firmware and hardware.
  • Ability to read schematics and work with and automate electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and voltmeters.
  • Strong understanding of QA methodologies, best practices, and testing frameworks, with the ability to tailor processes for high-quality firmware releases.
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment with agile development processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to document and convey complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Passion for developing IoT solutions at the intersection of electronics hardware, mobile applications (iOS and Android), and cloud technologies.
  • Preferred experience with communication protocols (Wi-Fi, BLE, and Thread), and analyzing network packet sniffers and logs.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD systems, version control, and test-driven development.
