Job description

Overview
We are seeking a full-time Senior Database Administrator at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for performing and planning management and administration of technology in area of specialty and working with team members to ensure technology is effectively supporting enterprise systems. This role also shares knowledge and provides mentoring to other IT associates.
Essential Functions
  • Analyzes existing database systems and recommends improvements and tunes and optimizes database objects when necessary
  • Configures and administers enterprise SQL Server environments
  • Collaborates with supervisors and security champions to establish database security structures and ensure SOX compliance
  • Creates/maintains database access systems including tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, and triggers
  • Administers database replication between servers, across Local Area Network and Wide Area Network
  • Provides 24x7 on-call support
  • Provides significant contributions to defining team roadmap and priorities
  • Develops reliable solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity
  • Demonstrates broad understanding of Garmin's business model, including Engineering, Operations, Finance, Sales, and Marketing
  • Mentors and guides less-experienced Database Administrators
  • Researches new technologies and proposes cost effective solutions
  • Leads major incident troubleshooting involving multiple disciplines
  • Provides innovation within the area of expertise

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or another related field AND a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Proficient with SQL Server (up though 2025)
  • Proficient with performing upgrades of SQL Server and troubleshooting performance issues
  • Proficient with SQL Server Always On
  • Proficient with OS migrations related to Windows
  • Experience with custom scripting, ideally Linux
  • Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively
  • Strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in a small team setting
  • Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization

Desired Qualifications
  • Oracle database, Linux and Shell script
  • Experience with automation, especially with Windows and SQL Server OS Patching
  • Previous experience working in a team environment
