What is an SQL project manager?

An SQL Project Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing projects that involve SQL databases, ensuring that database-related tasks are completed on time and within scope. They coordinate between technical teams, such as database administrators and developers, and business stakeholders to define project requirements, manage timelines, and resolve issues. Their role requires both project management skills and a good understanding of SQL and database concepts to effectively guide and support the project team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SQL project manager?

To thrive as a SQL Project Manager, you need expertise in database management, SQL programming, and project management methodologies, typically supported by a degree in computer science or IT and relevant certifications. Familiarity with relational database systems (such as Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle), project management tools (like Jira or MS Project), and certifications like PMP or Agile are highly valued. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you effectively coordinate teams, manage stakeholders, and drive projects to completion. These capabilities are essential to ensure successful database project delivery, alignment with business goals, and efficient cross-functional collaboration.

How does a SQL project manager typically collaborate with database administrators and development teams during project execution?

A SQL Project Manager works closely with database administrators to ensure that project requirements align with database capabilities, data security standards, and best practices. They also coordinate with development teams to manage timelines, allocate resources, and address technical challenges as they arise. Effective communication and regular status meetings are key to identifying potential roadblocks early and keeping everyone aligned on project goals. By bridging the gap between stakeholders, technical teams, and end-users, the SQL Project Manager helps deliver projects on time and within scope.

WHOOP is hiring a Security Project Manager to help scale the operational excellence of the Office of the CISO (OCISO). In this role, you will lead complex cross-functional security initiatives while building the governance, reporting, and operational processes that enable the Security organization to execute efficiently and effectively. You are an organized program leader who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys creating scalable systems, and can translate operational data into actionable insights for technical and executive stakeholders alike.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead cross-functional Security, GRC, and IT Security initiatives from planning through execution by defining scope, timelines, milestones, dependencies, risks, and stakeholder communications to deliver strategic outcomes.
  • Drive Security portfolio planning and execution by partnering with Security leadership to manage roadmaps, priorities, resource planning, dependencies, and delivery risks aligned with business objectives.
  • Develop and continuously improve Security program governance through standardized processes, documentation, operating cadences, templates, and project management best practices that enable consistent execution across the organization.
  • Build executive dashboards, KPIs, KRIs, and portfolio reporting by aggregating data from Jira, Confluence, GRC platforms, and other operational systems to provide visibility into program health, organizational performance, and risk.

  • Partner closely with Engineering, Infrastructure, Compliance, Privacy, Legal, IT, and business stakeholders to remove blockers, coordinate strategic initiatives, support audit and compliance programs, and ensure successful project delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5+ years of experience in Technical Project Management, Program Management, Security Operations, Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC), IT Operations, or a related field.
  • Proven experience leading complex, cross-functional technical initiatives from planning through delivery in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish program governance, manage project portfolios, prioritize competing initiatives, and drive operational excellence.
  • Experience developing executive-level dashboards, KPIs, status reporting, and data-driven insights using operational data from multiple systems.
  • Advanced experience with Jira, including workflow administration, reporting, automation, and project management best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and present effectively to technical teams and executive leadership.
  • Experience supporting Information Security, GRC, Compliance, or IT organizations, with familiarity with frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, NIST CSF, or similar security standards preferred.
  • Experience with workflow automation, business intelligence, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or similar reporting and analytics tools is a plus.
  • PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or equivalent project management certification is preferred.
  • Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
