Job description

SQL Database Manager

The SQL Database Manager is expected to be able to accomplish the following:

  • Engineering & Administration: Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server instances (on-prem and/or cloud), including HA/DR (Always On Availability Groups, log shipping), backup/restore, patching, and capacity planning.
  • Performance & Reliability: Monitor and tune databases—index strategy, execution plans, I/O and memory optimization; implement baselines and health dashboards.
  • Data Lifecycle Management: Oversee schema changes, environment promotions, and release coordination through change management (Dev/Test/Prod) with version control and automation.
  • Security & Compliance: Implement and audit RBAC, encryption at rest/in transit, auditing, and STIG-driven hardening aligned to DoD policies and tenant security guidelines for TS/SCI environments.
  • Scripting & Automation: Build administrative scripts (T-SQL, PowerShell) for maintenance, compliance checks, and repeatable deployments.
  • Continuity & DR: Define and test RPO/RTO objectives; validate backups, restores, and failover procedures through regular exercises.
  • Data Quality & Integrity: Enforce standards, validate ETL jobs, and coordinate with application teams to remediate data issues.
  • Collaboration & Support: Partner with application owners, cybersecurity, network, and storage teams; provide Tier 3 escalation support and on-call rotation coverage as required.
  • Documentation: Maintain SOPs, runbooks, architecture diagrams, CM plans, and ATO evidence artifacts.
  • Reporting: Provide capacity, performance, vulnerability, and compliance reporting to program leadership.

Required qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI + CI Poly clearance
  • BS, 5-7 years of relevant experience; MS, 3-5 years; PhD, 0-3 years
  • One of the following DoD 8570/CS-DAT-421 certifications: CISSP (Preferred), CASP+, GCED, CISA
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server (2016+), TSQL, backup/restore strategies, high availability, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with PowerShell for automation and administrative scripting.
  • Hands on with change management, SDLC environments, and release governance in a secure enterprise.
  • Familiarity with STIG/hardening practices, auditing, and security controls applicable to DoD environments.
