Overview
We are seeking a full-time Lead Database Administrator at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for leading administration of technology by contributing expertise in researching new technologies and proposing cost effective solutions. This role also facilitates team discussions and plans and contributes innovative suggestions within the area of discipline.
Essential Functions
  • Database upgrade and migrations
  • Monitoring, backupand recovery tools
  • Analyzes existing database systems, recommends improvements and tunes/ optimizes database objects when necessary
  • Demonstrates the ability to solve moderately complex technical problems independently
  • Demonstrated experience in successful implementation of technology solutions
  • Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization
  • Provides on-call support
  • Mentors and guides less-experienced Database Administrators
  • Provides innovation within the area of expertise
  • Facilitates team discussions and meetings
  • Serves as a leader of change
  • Demonstrates professional maturity through giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Addresses conflict effectively without appreciable oversight

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or another related field AND a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience
  • Experience withat least two of the following database platforms:
    • RDBMS: MySQL, SQL Server or Postgres
    • Search: OpenSearch/Elasticsearch
    • No SQL: Cassandra
    • Caching: Valkey/ Redis
    • Streaming: Kafka
    • Messaging: RabbitMQ
  • Develops automation scripts using Bash/Python/Ansible for managing database infrastructure
  • Excellent academics with the demonstrated ability to apply learned knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively
  • Strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in a small team setting
