Sputtering Technician information

What is a sputtering technician?

Sputtering Technicians are skilled professionals who operate and maintain sputtering equipment, which is used to deposit thin films of material onto surfaces in industries like electronics, optics, and solar energy. They monitor vacuum systems, ensure precise coating thickness, and troubleshoot equipment issues to maintain high production quality. Sputtering Technicians often work in cleanroom environments and follow strict safety protocols. Their expertise is crucial in manufacturing products such as semiconductors, display screens, and advanced coatings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sputtering technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sputtering Technician, you need a solid understanding of vacuum deposition processes, materials science, and a high school diploma or associate degree in a technical field. Familiarity with sputtering equipment, vacuum systems, thin film metrology tools, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help technicians excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with engineers. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining production quality, ensuring equipment reliability, and supporting advanced manufacturing operations.

What are some common challenges faced by sputtering technicians, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Sputtering Technicians often encounter challenges such as maintaining the cleanliness of vacuum chambers, ensuring precise thin-film deposition, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. Staying vigilant about contamination control and following strict protocols are essential for producing high-quality coatings. Additionally, strong attention to detail and proactive communication with engineers and quality assurance teams help address process deviations quickly. Regular equipment maintenance and thorough documentation also play a key role in minimizing downtime and ensuring consistent results.

Job description

Job Summary
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world's leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
General Atomics Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) division designs, manufactures and characterized first-of-a-kind precision components in support of the national labs, fusion and science technologies. Components are manufactured and measured on a variety of highly-specialized and precise equipment and are often millimeter in scale with micron-sized features and tolerances.
We currently have an opening for a junior Technician in our Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) division within the Energy group. This position will be based in San Diego, California, at GA's Torrey Pines campus. The position requires working under minimal supervision to accomplish maintenance, assembly, and fabrication tasks associated with the development of chemical vapor, physical vapor, sputtering, and electrochemical deposition coatings for the inertial confinement fusion experiments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operates and maintains lab equipment such as vacuum systems, pumps, compressors, and various gas bottles for equipment
  • Interprets basic information to recognize when coating operations are drifting out of established parameters and performs adjustments to bring systems back to satisfactory operating conditions
  • Collects and records daily data accurately and efficiently
  • Performs preventive maintenance for coater systems
  • Performs inspections, dimensional measurements, and ensures compliance with quality control documentation associated with components fabrication
  • Completes and maintains material inventories and equipment maintenance schedules
  • Ability and willingness to handle hazardous materials
  • Follow safety protocols defined by federal and state regulations and GA work procedures
  • Works routinely in a clean room environment including wearing necessary clean room clothing
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required within IFT

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires high school diploma or equivalent with one or more years of experience.
  • Must be able to work with common hand tools and operate laboratory equipment.
  • Must have the capability to perform complex assignments with little or no direction.
  • Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, or radioactive materials.
  • Experience with vacuum systems and vacuum coaters is desirable
  • Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field required.
  • Requires the ability to handle BB sized (2 mm) items with vacuum wands.
  • Ability to follow clean room protocols.
  • Able to work in a cleanroom lab environment requiring extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting to 50 lbs.
