What is a spray tech?

A Spray Tech, short for Spray Technician, is a professional responsible for applying fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or other treatments to landscapes, turf, crops, or industrial sites using specialized spraying equipment. They often work for landscaping companies, golf courses, agricultural businesses, or pest control services. The job involves mixing chemicals according to safety guidelines, calibrating equipment, monitoring application areas for effectiveness, and ensuring all work complies with safety and environmental regulations. Spray Techs need to have a good understanding of chemical handling, safety procedures, and sometimes require specific certifications or licenses depending on state or local regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a spray tech?

To thrive as a Spray Tech, you need knowledge of chemical application methods, safety procedures, and often a pesticide applicator license or certification. Familiarity with spray equipment, calibration tools, and safety data sheets is typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and good communication skills help ensure safe and effective treatment of areas. These skills are crucial for maintaining environmental safety, regulatory compliance, and delivering quality service to clients.

What are some common challenges spray techs face when working on large landscaping projects?

Spray Techs often encounter challenges such as ensuring even application of chemicals across expansive or uneven terrain, managing weather-related variables like wind and rain, and adhering to safety protocols for chemical handling. Coordination with landscaping teams is essential to avoid overlaps or missed areas, and maintaining equipment in the field can be demanding. Staying organized and communicating effectively with supervisors and crew members helps mitigate these challenges and ensures project success.

Responsibilities

  • Support the painting team by performing basic preparation duties, including masking, taping, sanding, finishing, deburring, and basic paint work.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot painting equipment, ensuring it remains in proper working condition and performing preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Stay current with new painting technologies, materials, and industry best practices, and help implement process improvements when appropriate.
  • Follow instructions and work under the supervision and guidance of more experienced painters.
  • Adhere to lean manufacturing guidelines and contribute continuous improvement suggestions to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Use spray guns and related paint systems in paint booths, body shop-style environments, and industrial painting setups.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and blueprints.

  • Familiarity with working in an organized, modern manufacturing facility.
  • Comfort working on 1st or 2nd shift in a production environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a team of painters and production staff.
  • Willingness to learn new painting technologies and participate in specialty training and skill development.

Why Work Here?

You join a fast-growing, modern manufacturing organization that invests heavily in its paint operations and technology. The facility offers better conditions than a typical body shop, including a clean, air-conditioned, and well-organized environment with consistent shifts and voluntary overtime options. You benefit from competitive compensation, medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k), paid time off, and an employee assistance program.
