What is a sports writer?

A Sports Writer creates articles or copy content about sports events for digital and print media publications. As a Sports Writer, your main responsibility is researching athletes, teams, and their stories. You may also attend press conferences, games, or other events held by sports organizations. Sports Writers may only write about specific sports, but it is not unusual for one to cover the entire industry for a smaller outlet. As news outlets now rely heavily on freelance writers, you may not work for a specific publication at all. While your exact duties may differ depending on the position, your job is to write compelling news stories that will inform and engage your readers and draw them to your employer’s publication.

What are some typical challenges sports writers face when covering live events?

Sports writers often face tight deadlines and rapidly changing circumstances when covering live events. They must quickly process and analyze the action, conduct interviews with athletes or coaches in high-pressure environments, and produce accurate, engaging content on short notice. Balancing objectivity while delivering compelling storytelling, as well as managing logistics like travel and access to press areas, are common challenges in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sports writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sports Writer, you need excellent writing, research, and storytelling abilities, typically supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems, social media platforms, and digital editing tools is often required. Strong interviewing skills, adaptability, and the ability to work under tight deadlines help distinguish successful sports writers. These skills ensure accurate, engaging, and timely coverage that resonates with audiences and keeps them informed.

What is the difference between Sports Writer vs Sports Journalist?

AspectSports WriterSports Journalist
CredentialsTypically a degree in journalism, communications, or related fieldSimilar credentials, often with additional reporting or media training
Work EnvironmentNewspapers, magazines, online media, freelanceBroadcast media, online outlets, print publications
Industry UsageUsed interchangeably in many contexts, but Sports Journalist often implies reporting and on-camera workBroader role including reporting, interviewing, and multimedia content

While both roles involve covering sports topics, a Sports Writer primarily focuses on creating written content such as articles and features. A Sports Journalist may engage in reporting, interviewing, and multimedia storytelling, often in broadcast or digital formats. The roles overlap significantly, but Sports Journalists typically have a broader scope of media skills and on-camera presence.

Are sports writers in demand?

Sports writers are in demand in media outlets, online platforms, and sports organizations, especially those with strong writing skills and knowledge of sports. However, competition is high, and job availability can vary based on the media industry’s economic health and digital content trends.

How much do sports writers get paid?

Sports writers' salaries vary depending on experience, location, and the employer, but the median annual wage in the United States is around $45,000 to $60,000. Entry-level positions typically start lower, while experienced writers or those working for major outlets can earn over $80,000 annually. Many sports writers also supplement income through freelance work or by building a strong online presence.

Stand Together

Arlington, VA • On-site

$75K - $100K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 20 days ago

Job description

Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps America’s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our country’s biggest problems, from education to the economy, broken communities, and toxic division, among dozens of other pressing issues. We provide our partners with access to resources including funding, thought leadership, a network of peers, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.

As a Writer on the Grassroots Editorial Team, you’ll play a key role in crafting clear, concise, and compelling communications that empower millions of people across the country to advocate for policy changes that get results.

You’ll write across platforms for Stand Together and key partners like Americans for Prosperity (AFP), AFP Action, The LIBRE Initiative, and Concerned Veterans for America, helping to drive societal change through effective storytelling that emphasizes aligning the key institutions of government to their proper roles.

This role requires 5+ years of relevant experience in grassroots politics, journalism, or political communications, including elections-related work, and the ability to translate complex ideas into clear narratives and a strong understanding of tone and audience. (Additional experience is a plus.)

You’ll need to be entrepreneurial, feedback-friendly, results-oriented, and have a strong eye for accuracy and brevity. You must also demonstrate a clear understanding of the political and electoral landscape and our diverse stakeholders’ nuanced messaging, while continually honing your craft.

How You Will Contribute
  • Write high-impact content, including emails, blog posts, direct mail, reports, and event communications that inspire grassroots advocates and donor audiences.

  • Develop content that clearly conveys Stand Together’s and AFP’s perspectives on key issues like elections, the economy, health care, immigration, and the role of government.

  • Collaborate effectively with a self-driven, entrepreneurial mindset to develop strategic content for key initiatives, often on tight deadlines.

  • Adapt to evolving priorities with a self-driven, entrepreneurial mindset and a commitment to results.

What You Will Bring
  • 5+ years of professional writing experience, preferably in grassroots politics, journalism, or political communications, including elections-related work, with excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, and a strong attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to simplify complex policy and strategic concepts into compelling, audience-tailored narratives across formats and platforms, aligned with brand voice and content strategy.

  • A collaborative, cross-functional mindset, with experience navigating fast-paced, matrixed environments, defining deliverables, managing competing priorities, and consistently meeting deadlines.

  • Strategic insight and entrepreneurial drive, with a deep understanding of the state and federal policy landscape, and the ability to connect daily writing tasks to long-term organizational impact.

  • Enthusiasm to contribute to Stand Together's vision and principled approach to solving problems, and a commitment to stewarding our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect.

What We Offer
  • Competitive benefits: Enjoy a 6% 401(k) match with immediate vesting, flexible time off, comprehensive health and dental plans, plus wellness and mental health support through Peloton and Talkspace.

  • A meaningful career: Join a passionate community of over 1,300 employees dedicated to improving lives and driving innovative solutions to complex social challenges.

  • Commitment to growth: Thrive in a non-hierarchical environment that empowers employees to discover, develop and apply their unique talents.

  • Competitive compensation: Our approach rewards the value you create through competitive salaries and bonus opportunities, allowing you to share in the success you help drive.

For this role, the anticipated base salary range is $75,000–$100,000 per year. This role may also be eligible for additional bonus compensation designed to align total compensation with an employee’s overall contribution to the organization.

Our Principles-Based Management™ (PBM) compensation philosophy is grounded in an individualized approach that rewards the long-term value each person creates for the organization. Compensation decisions are informed by a variety of factors, including relevant experience, capabilities, demonstrated skills, role responsibilities, and expected contribution. Consistent with this approach, base salary may vary within or outside of the anticipated range based on these considerations.

Our Values: Working for an organization within the Stand Together philanthropic community is different from many other places. The culture is deeply rooted in Principle Based Management® (PBM®), a framework guided by the principles that drive human progress, such as dignity, openness, and bottom-up empowerment. PBM® empowers employees to be entrepreneurial, to innovate, and to continually drive transformation.

We believe diversity fuels creativity, broadens knowledge, and helps drive success.  That is why we’re proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and strive to treat all employees and applicants with honesty, dignity, and respect.
