Sports Vision information

What is sports vision?

Sports vision refers to the field of eye care and training that focuses on optimizing an athlete’s visual abilities to enhance their performance in sports. It involves assessing and improving skills such as hand-eye coordination, depth perception, reaction time, and visual tracking. Sports vision specialists may use various tests and exercises to help athletes see more clearly, react faster, and make better decisions during play. This area is important for athletes of all levels who want to gain a competitive edge. Interventions can include vision therapy, specialized eyewear, or visual skills training tailored to the demands of specific sports.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sports vision specialist?

To thrive as a Sports Vision Specialist, you need expertise in optometry or ophthalmology, with a background in visual performance assessment and enhancement, often supported by a relevant degree and licensure. Familiarity with specialized equipment like vision training software, eye-tracking systems, and performance analysis tools is common. Strong communication, analytical skills, and the ability to tailor programs to individual athletes help set top professionals apart. These skills are crucial for optimizing athletes’ visual skills, ultimately improving on-field performance and safety.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals in sports vision roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Sports Vision often encounter challenges such as earning the trust of athletes and coaches, adapting vision training techniques to different sports, and staying updated with the latest research in visual performance. Building strong communication skills and demonstrating the tangible benefits of vision training can help foster buy-in from teams. Additionally, collaborating closely with athletic trainers and medical staff ensures a holistic approach to athlete development, while continuing education helps maintain cutting-edge knowledge in this evolving field.

Job description

Optometric Center for Family Vision Care and Vision Therapy in San Carlos, California, is seeking an Associate Optometrist to join its respected, family-oriented private practice. This is a meaningful opportunity for a seasoned professional looking for a stable, supportive environment, or a motivated recent graduate eager to grow clinically, while providing personalized care in a practice known for compassion, advanced technology, and specialized services that help patients of all ages see, learn, work, and live with greater confidence.

Why join us?

Founded more than 75 years ago by Frank Mann, OD, Optometric Center for Family Vision Care and Vision Therapy has been a trusted part of the San Carlos community for decades, with Dr. Carole Hong serving as an owner for more than 30 years and Dr. Cynthia Huang joining as partner in 2023. Driven by compassion, advanced technology, and high-touch care, the practice goes beyond comprehensive eye exams to help patients of all ages overcome visual challenges that impact how they learn, work, heal, and live. The team is made up of 2 part-time associates and 3 full-time doctors, who specialize in vision therapy and rehabilitation, sports vision, myopia management, dry eye care, specialty contact lens fittings, neuro-visual rehabilitation, and evidence-based treatment plans designed to support children, athletes, brain injury survivors, and patients with complex visual needs. With a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach and a strong commitment to raising the standard of vision care, this practice offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference while growing alongside a dedicated team that truly cares about each patient's long-term success.

What you'll do:

As an Associate Optometrist, you'll provide comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages, including routine exams, diagnosis and management of ocular disease, glasses and contact lens prescriptions, ocular emergency care, and co-management for LASIK and cataract procedures. You'll also have the opportunity to support specialty services such as myopia management, dry eye care, binocular vision evaluations, vision therapy, and neuro-visual rehabilitation, with training available as needed. With access to advanced technology, including Optos Daytona, Zeiss FDT, Myah Corneal Topographer and Biometry, Meibography, Neurolens, Crystal PM EHR, and a variety of vision therapy tools, you'll deliver thoughtful, personalized care while building long-term relationships with patients and their families. This role begins part-time at approximately 8-16 hours per week, with the opportunity to grow into a full-time schedule.

Who you are:

You're a compassionate, patient-focused Optometrist licensed in the state of California who values quality care, clear communication, and a collaborative team environment. You're comfortable caring for patients of all ages and visual needs, committed to continuous learning, stay current with advancements in optometry, and are excited to contribute to a practice known for thoughtful, personalized care. Experience in vision therapy, myopia management, or dry eye care is preferred but not required, and the team is happy to support the right candidate's growth in these specialty areas.

Why you'll love San Carlos, California:
Known as the "City of Good Living," San Carlos offers a welcoming Peninsula lifestyle with the charm of a close-knit community and convenient access to both San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Residents enjoy a lively, walkable downtown along Laurel Street, local restaurants and shops, community events, parks, trails, and nearby outdoor escapes that make it easy to unwind after work or spend weekends exploring. With quiet neighborhoods, strong local amenities, and a balanced mix of small-town warmth and Bay Area opportunity, San Carlos is a great place to build a career while enjoying an active, well-rounded lifestyle.

You'll enjoy a range of benefits, including:

  • Competitive compensation (commensurate with experience)
  • Paid vacation
  • IRA with matching up to 4%
  • Health benefits for employees who work more 32+ hours per week
  • Malpractice insurance
  • Continuing education allowance
  • AOA/COA and/or specialty organization dues (ie OVDRA)
  • Liability insurance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Optometry license in California

Preferred Specialties:

  • Prefer VT, Myopia or Dry Eye management but not necessary
