SUMMARY
To help each participating student to achieve a high level of skill, an understanding of the strategies of the game, an appreciation for the values of discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork, and an increased level of self-esteem.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The following is a list of qualifications for the position, any one of which may be waived by the Board in exercising its prerogative to determine qualifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Must have regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Coach individuals in the skills and techniques necessary for the excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Teach sound and updated strategies of the game.
  • Plans and schedules all practices in season and out.
  • Is responsible for out of season programs.
  • Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area assigned to the sport for practices and contests.
  • Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
  • Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards.
  • Establishes a fair set of behavior standards in developing team and training rules.
  • Maintains competency in knowledge of the rules and interpretations, contest procedures, and general information about all aspects of the sport.
  • Follows all rules concerning state and district guidelines concerning student academic eligibility.
  • Is competent in CPR and basic First Aid and works with the training staff to develop a sound program of injury prevention and follow up.
  • Works closely with the athletic director in scheduling interscholastic contests.
  • Maintain updated inventory and recommend purchase of equipment, supplies and uniforms.
  • Collects all physical forms, emergency forms and conduct codes and places those on file with the athletic office.
  • Develops and updates all rosters and helps prepare state tournament information.
  • Account for all equipment within the program or delegate this responsibility.
  • Develops a consistent and positive public communications procedure through the school and the media to inform the community about the athletic program.
  • Support and uphold the District Student Conduct Code.
  • Attends all necessary meetings on the state, conference, and department level.
  • Evaluation of staff performance.
  • Evaluation of the program.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise assistant coaches.
Supervise any volunteers.
Supervise student athletes in that sport.
Supervise any students or persons associated with that sport.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Valid teaching certificate is preferred although not required. Hrs. in physical education or equivalent hours and courses in coaching theory are helpful. Certification in CPR, First Aid is recommended.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
The ability to read and interpret documents, instructional manuals, technical reports, procedures, and rulings. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
The ability to calculate figures and amounts, to work with percentages. The ability to apply basic concepts in algebra and geometry. To have some computer literacy. The ability to work with statistics.

REASONING ABILITY
The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. The ability to problem solve various situations. The ability to use of sound judgment in making decisions that affect the program.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Exhibit qualities of leadership. Have the ability to organize. Show a spirit of cooperation. Possess the ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Possess the ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
