Job Description
The Laredo Morning Times serves the local community by delivering trusted, timely and in-depth coverage. We are seeking a sports reporter who is passionate about journalism, skilled at writing compelling stories in AP style, and able to thrive under deadline pressure. Ideal candidates are curious, organized and determined, with strong observation and investigative abilities.

The Laredo Morning Times' sports section is recognized among the best in Texas. From 2022-25, LMT led the state in both first-place awards and total awards for sports writing at the annual Texas Managing Editors/Headliners Excellence in Journalism Contest for Division II. TME also honored LMT's overall newsroom among the best in Texas three times between 2022-25, and it finished runner-up for General Excellence in the Texas Press Association's 2024 Better Newspaper Contest.

Laredo's sports scene offers a wide variety of coverage opportunities, from seven major high schools to Texas A&M International University athletics (NCAA Division II), the Tecolotes Dos Laredos of the Mexican Baseball League, and the Laredo Heat of the National Premier Soccer League.

Responsibilities

  • Report, write and format stories for print and digital platforms.
  • Cover games, matches and tournaments across all assigned levels and beats.
  • Research teams, athletes and programs to produce in-depth features and enterprise stories.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships within the sports community.
  • Capture and edit photos to accompany stories.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree in journalism or related field preferred.
  • At least one year of reporting experience preferred, though recent graduates with strong experience through internships or student media are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong writing, interviewing and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with AP style.
