News-Press NOW/St Joseph New-Press is looking for a sports reporter for our newspaper operation.
The Sports Reporter serves as a provider of sports coverage for the St. Joseph News-Press, directing comprehensive local sports journalism across print, digital, social media, newsletters, eEdition, and emerging platforms.
This is a highly visible role for a journalist who thrives on telling meaningful stories, building community relationships, and leading innovative local sports coverage. The Sports Reporter will remain active covering games, writing stories, producing multimedia content, and engaging directly with the communities we serve.
The successful candidate will help shape the future of local sports journalism by delivering timely, accurate, and compelling coverage that celebrates the athletes, coaches, schools, and traditions that define northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.
This is more than a writing position - it's an opportunity to lead the continued resurgence of one of the region's most respected sports brands.
Qualifications for this position include:
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Exceptional reporting, writing, and editing skills
  • Strong command of AP Style
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under deadline
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and digital publishing platforms
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

Preferred
  • Newspaper newsroom experience
  • Sports reporting experience
  • Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Photography and basic video production
  • Familiarity with BLOX CMS
  • SEO and audience development experience
  • Analytics platforms
  • Knowledge of northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas sports
