This role will focus primarily on women’s sports coverage, particularly the WNBA and women’s college basketball, but the ideal candidate is versatile enough to report and write across a variety of sports and topics. This writer will coordinate with editors to react to emerging news in women’s sports and also to produce creative, differentiated stories steeped in authoritative reporting and premium storytelling.

The ability to write quickly, clearly and cleanly is a must, as are a strong voice and an eye for the kinds of unique stories that have set SI apart for more than 70 years. This writer will also have a keen sense for how stories that begin with the written word can flourish on other platforms and will work closely with SI’s video and social teams. The ability to collaborate across the newsroom is essential and candidates must be willing to work flexible hours.

Brand:
Sports Illustrated

What You'll Do

  • Report and write news reactions, columns and analysis pieces, primarily on the WNBA and women’s college basketball
  • Report and write engaging feature, enterprise and trend stories for SI.com and SI’s signature magazine on a variety of topics, including but not limited to the WNBA and women’s college basketball
  • Pitch ideas constantly, staying on the lookout for stories that will engage, inform and surprise our audience and drive the sports news cycle
  • Extend written insights, analysis and storytelling to other platforms, including social, video, podcasts and other audience-engagement media
  • Coordinate with editors to anticipate news cycles, plan for tentpole events and help build content calendars for WNBA and women’s college basketball coverage

What You Have

  • 7+ years of sports journalism experience, ideally covering women’s basketball for a major media organization. A proven track record of versatility across sports and topics is a plus
  • Deep knowledge of and a wide network in the women’s basketball community
  • Strong news judgment and awareness of emerging trends
  • An ability to write clearly and quickly but also with style and voice. A magazine sensibility and/or experience writing magazine-style features is a plus
  • Excellent organizational, reporting, communication and time-management skills, with the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects from concept to completion
  • Mastery of social media, both as a news gathering tool and a way to build your brand as well as SI’s
  • Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism
  • Flexibility to travel and work nights, weekends and holidays
