About Hutchinson Community College
Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) advances a tradition of excellence through learning and collaboration. The On-Call Custodian supports this mission by providing a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, employees, and visitors.
Position Summary
Custodians play a key role in operations and the overall campus experience by helping to keep spaces clean, safe and ready for each day. A variety of equipment, as well as manual cleaning tools will be used to complete tasks.
This position is part of a pool of on-call custodial staff who fill in, as needed, to maintain facilities across campus during staff absences, events, or peak workload periods.
Essential Functions
  • Cleaning of buildings includes dusting, cleaning windows, floors, walls, and furniture, restroom fixtures, toilets, sinks, etc. Includes the use of custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Custodians are responsible for maintaining the interior spaces from the ceiling to the floor. This includes but not limited to cleaning light fixtures and replacing light bulbs, cleaning HVAC supply and return vents, and changing HVAC filters depending on their location.
  • Assist other employees as needed.
  • Willingness to work days, evenings, and/or weekend hours as necessary.
  • Arrive on time for work and successfully perform the responsibilities of the position.
  • Comply with HutchCC policies, procedures, and practices.

Secondary/Support Functions
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Director and/or Coordinators of the Facilities department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a neat, clean individual portraying a positive image to students, staff and community members.
  • The ability to work as needed, including day, evening, and weekend hours substituting for absent coworkers.
  • The ability to cooperate with students, college personnel, and the community.
  • Must have the ability to learn and comprehend basic instructions and apply them effectively to complete custodial tasks.

Physical/Work Environment Requirements
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to safely perform tasks involving pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, stooping, walking, carrying, climbing, and regularly lifting up to 50 pounds. Must possess sufficient eye/hand/foot coordination to operate custodial equipment and tools.
  • Working Conditions: Work may occur in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to adverse conditions including blood, bodily fluids, tissue, and communicable diseases. Must be able to use sound judgment, apply tact and courtesy in challenging situations, and have visual acuity to view a computer terminal as needed. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Mental requirements include the ability to learn and comprehend basic instructions about the position.
  • Physical and mental qualifications must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Post Offer Assessments
Successful completion of a post offer physical capacity assessment and post offer drug screen is required.
Compensation & Employment Status - Emergency Status
This is a non-exempt, hourly position with hours that vary based on campus needs. Work hours are not guaranteed or regularly scheduled. On-call custodial staff are part of a pool of employeeswho provide coverage during staff absences, events, or other special circumstances. This position does not have any required work hours and may accept or decline requests when contacted.
To remain active in the on-call pool, staff must work at least one shift every 90days. Offered hours of work could include college-recognized holidays or weekends.
