Job Title: Sporting Goods Clerk

Position Summary:

The Sporting Goods Clerk is responsible for providing exceptional customer service and assisting with the day-to-day operations of the sporting goods department. This role includes maintaining product displays, stocking inventory, helping customers with product selection, including firearms, processing transactions, and ensuring the department is clean and organized. The Sporting Goods Clerk will contribute to the store's success by ensuring customers have a positive shopping experience, particularly in the firearms section, and that the store's inventory is well-maintained.

General Purpose:

The Sporting Goods Clerk's primary responsibility is to support customers in selecting sporting equipment, apparel, accessories, and firearms, while maintaining an organized and inviting shopping environment. This role involves assisting with sales, inventory management, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations on firearms, and ensuring the department meets its operational goals.

Position Responsibilities: 

  •  Greet and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner, providing product recommendations and answering questions about sporting goods and firearms.
  •  Assist customers in selecting firearms, ammunition, and related accessories, ensuring compliance with all legal requirements.
  •  Process electronic ATF Form 4473 & FBI NICS background checks and ensure proper documentation is completed for firearm sales, adhering to all local, state, and federal regulations utilizing the Fastbound system.
  •  Maintain product displays, ensuring they are well-organized, visually appealing, and stocked with merchandise.
  •  Operate the cash register, process sales transactions, and handle cash and credit payments accurately.
  •  Assist with inventory control by stocking shelves, receiving shipments, and organizing products in the back room.
  •  Ensure products are properly tagged with prices and promotions.
  •  Monitor product levels and notify manager stock is low or needs to be reordered.
  •  Ensure firearms are stored securely and safely in compliance with legal regulations.
  •  Maintain a clean and safe store environment.
  •  Handle customer inquiries, resolve issues, and direct customers to the manager when necessary.
  •  Stay informed about the latest firearms trends, product knowledge, firearm regulations, and hunting regulations to assist customers effectively.
  •  Assist with the setup and execution of events, sales, and promotions.
  •  Support team members and work collaboratively to meet store goals and ensure smooth store operations.
  •  Other duties as assigned by leadership.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  •  Previous retail or customer service experience is a plus, preferably in sporting goods or firearm sales.
  •  Knowledge of firearms, ammunition, and related accessories is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the Fastbound System is highly desirable.
  •  Must be familiar with legal requirements for selling firearms and able to process background checks and necessary paperwork.
  •  Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  •  Basic math skills to process sales and handle cash accurately.
  •  Ability to lift and move merchandise, including heavy boxes up to 50 Lbs.
  •  Very strong attention to detail especially in reviewing ATF Form 4473 completed by customers and entering information into the FBI NICS background check system.
  •  Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  •  Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  •  Ability to pass background checks and meet legal requirements for handling/selling firearms.
