What are Splicing Managers?

Splicing Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams that perform splicing of fiber optic or copper cables, typically in telecommunications or utility industries. Their duties include scheduling and supervising splicing work, ensuring safety and quality standards, troubleshooting technical issues, and coordinating with project managers or clients. They play a crucial role in ensuring that installations, repairs, and maintenance of cable networks are completed efficiently and to industry standards.

What are some common challenges a Splicing Manager faces when coordinating teams on multiple telecom projects?

A Splicing Manager often oversees multiple crews working on different sites, which can make coordination and communication challenging. Ensuring all teams adhere to safety protocols, meet tight deadlines, and maintain high-quality standards requires strong organizational skills. Additionally, unexpected issues such as inclement weather or supply delays can impact project timelines, so adaptability and proactive problem-solving are essential. Effective Splicing Managers foster teamwork and maintain clear communication channels to keep projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Splicing Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Splicing Manager, you need expertise in fiber optic and copper splicing techniques, project management experience, and typically a background in telecommunications or a related field. Familiarity with splicing equipment, OTDR testing tools, and industry safety certifications like OSHA are commonly required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for overseeing teams and coordinating with clients. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and to quality standards, which is vital in the fast-paced telecom industry.

Job description

Company: Davey Resource Group, Inc.
Locations: Cleveland Heights, OH
Additional Locations: OH Statewide
Work Site: On Site
Req ID: 223960

Position Overview

The Splicing Coordinator oversees fiber optic splicing operations for telecommunications construction projects, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, and meet strict optical performance standards. This role involves coordinating between fiber engineers, splicing subcontractors, the client representative, and project stakeholders. Key tasks include reviewing splice matrices, overseeing fusion splicing (backbone and lateral), conducting OTDR/Power Meter testing audits, splicing scheduling, and managing the close-out documentation for fiber networks. This position is a technical leadership role, requiring deep "hands-on" splicing knowledge to troubleshoot light loss issues and manage specialized splicing crews in the field.

Job Duties
  • Directly supervises internal splicing crews and subcontractors, ensuring all fusion splicing, termination, and enclosure prep (FOSC) meet client specifications.

  • Partners with Project Managers to review splice maps, fiber schematics, and assignment sheets to ensure crews have accurate data before hitting the field.

  • Audits fiber test results (OTDR, Power Meter, and CD/PMD). Troubleshoots high-loss splices and identifies point-of-failure issues.

  • Provides daily production reports specifically tracking "splices completed" vs. "burn rate" to keep projects on schedule.

  • Conducts onsite visits to perform "ride-outs," ensuring enclosures are dressed properly and fiber slack is managed according to standards.

  • Ensures crews adhere to laser safety protocols and proper disposal of fiber shards/hazardous materials.

  • Leads the training of new splicers on specialized equipment, including fusion splicers, cleavers, and testing software.

  • Manages inventory of splicing consumables (sleeves, trays, pigtails) and specialized equipment maintenance.

  • Utilizes GIS software and fiber management systems to update "as-built" records after splicing completion.

  • Travels (up to 75%) to job sites to oversee splicing production and troubleshoot complex network handoffs.

Qualifications
  • Required: High-school diploma with a minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on fiber splicing experience (Fusion splicing, ribbon splicing, and emergency restoration).

  • Required: Proven experience overseeing or leading splicing crews (foreman or lead tech experience).

  • Required: Expert-level knowledge of fiber optic network architecture (FTTH, HFC, and Long-haul) and various fiber types.

  • Required: Proficiency with splicing equipment (Fujikura, Sumitomo, etc.) and testing equipment (Viavi, EXFO).

  • Required: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex splice matrices and blueprints.

  • Required: Good interpersonal skills for coordinating between engineering teams and field crews.

  • Required: Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and performing physically demanding tasks.

  • Preferred: Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent industry certification.

  • Preferred: Experience with fiber management software (e.g., OSPInsight, Vetro, or 3-GIS).
