What is a speech therapy internship?

A speech therapy internship is a supervised practical experience for students or recent graduates pursuing a career in speech-language pathology. During the internship, interns work under the guidance of licensed speech-language pathologists to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. They assist with patient evaluations, therapy sessions, and documentation, gaining hands-on skills necessary for professional practice. Internships are typically required for certification and licensure in the field.

What responsibilities can I expect during a speech therapy internship, and how closely will I work with licensed speech-language pathologists?

During a Speech Therapy Internship, you can expect to assist with patient assessments, observe therapy sessions, help prepare therapy materials, and sometimes conduct supervised practice exercises with clients. Interns typically work closely with licensed speech-language pathologists, receiving regular feedback and guidance. This collaborative environment allows interns to develop hands-on clinical skills, gain insight into treatment planning, and understand how to adapt therapy techniques to individual client needs. The experience is structured to gradually increase your responsibilities as you demonstrate competence and confidence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a speech therapy intern, and why are they important?
